Taking some time off. Need some book recommendations. Some light interesting non-fiction. No self help or management books. Just interesting topics that won’t make me think about work.
I'm assuming I'm not the only one about to go into their busiest season. How do you manage the craziness of the holiday season for your small business? I'm hiring seasonal staff for Nov-Feb.
EY folks - we're on holiday tomorrow, right?
Is it a good idea to tell my lead that I am about to have a mental breakdown? I am going through something personal, and this busy season hasn’t been easy for me. I requested pto, but basically was told that it is not appropriate to use pto in busy season. I am on the edge of quitting , but I think I should at least try to talk to someone before I give my notice. Any advice for this situation?
Been itching for a trip. Want to do something solo, drop the locations for best solo destinations. I have 22 PTO days so want to start exploring
Got an offer for moving to a boutique and was excited until I got the benefit info. Currently at $140, DTO, 12 holidays, high chance of decent bonus. New role is $160k, 24 days PTO, 8 holidays, only utilization bonus but good size.
The change is PTO/holidays is a huge deal for me but not sure if the salary makes up for it. They aren't budging on anything which to me is not a good sign. Really torn on what to do
Do you bring your work phone or laptop on vacation with you? Going away with partner for first time since covid hit and we both want to leave our work phones behind.
How does your firm deal with underperforming associates? We are crazy busy but have a couple first-years on vacation, 50-100 hours per month, and thinking we are a "lifestyle" firm. I don't want to just fire them, at least not yet, but I want to see a change. How many second chances do you give? How many months under budget?
HR or Payroll:
I had resigned from a job a few weeks ago. I’m entitled to 2 weeks (10 days) of vacation pay. I used 1.5 since January 1st. Will I be paid out the vacation pay that I earned from Jan-June, or the full 8.5 days that I would’ve had left?
Morning! Being laid off sux, I been down this road 5x in my career it never bets easier.
Dust off contacts and make your rounds
* if you’re in a good position to take time off do some, seems we all need a mental break anyway
Starting to look for a part time nanny now we’re going back to office (3 days a week). Total newbs here and just starting the process. One potential nanny asked for PTO and vacation days (and being paid if we don’t need her one of the agreed upon days). This makes sense, but is this typical? I’m in LA.
I have been offered a position in-house at a $500M-$1B company, mid-sized city LCOL, 10 YOE in private practice. They offered me $120k, w opp for undefined discretionary bonus. No paid parental leave or 401(k) match & only 1 week PTO in first year (but claim they have discretion for more). Is there any way to salvage this? Salary guides suggest TC should be around $200-215k. I want to get my foot in the door but this seems crazy low.
This may seem silly but I’ve never done it before - I accepted a new position and need to tell ACN I’m leaving. I’m really anxious about it - technically on PTO but will be pinging my managers to chat tomorrow. Any advice?
Need one help , for collecting Deloitte laptop i visited there collection centre by putting PTO ,can I reimburse my travel expenses (Bus Fare ) as from my home to ofc and ofc to home
It's around 600+ Km distance of one ways
I am so beyond ready to leave my current job, but can’t yet, since bonuses are paid out in January. 😬
In the meantime, I’ve applied to a lot of similar roles (slightly higher) but have not heard - good or bad - from any. Is it common for companies to slow down hiring in December because of Q4 rush, people on holiday, etc.?
Considering a move to NTT Data in a healthcare consulting role. Mixed reviews in the bowls. Major concerns are bench policy, staff aug roles, 2 week PTO, and high turnover due to job dissatisfaction. Recruiter and mgr had great things to say around growth and opportunity, which doesn’t align with feedback from the bowls or Glassdoor.
Understanding things have changed there in the last few months, I need un-biased advice from fellow fish who have recently joined or can speak to recent changes

What’s the pay like at Morgan & Morgan in NYC?
Was strongly encouraged to come back to the office to set an example… uh get back to me when it’s a direct order
Just started my first job at a mid size firm. Still awaiting bar results. The firm practices general civil lit - mainly defense (ID, prem liability, labor law, tort defense etc.) but some partners do plaintiff’s work too. So far they’ve had me working mainly on ID cases. I never knew people hate ID so much until I came on this app. Is it really that bad? Pay isn’t great but expecting a bump upon admission. Advice ?
Any advice for the NYLE? I'm already in a V40 outside of NY. I don't necessarily need a NY license so no pressure to pass honestly. Aside from the 17 hrs of videos, I've done nothing to prepare.
How to stay motivated or disciplined when you know you want to leave litigation? I plan to go in house in 1-1.5 years. Can't leave yet because I started a new job recently and need this experience. I just have 0 discipline and get so distracted while I work.
What are your thoughts on using legal continuing education credits for a different license? Essentially, taking credit for them in two professions (e.g. law and realty).
One of my partners asked me to start "pushing things down" to our paralegal to save on legal fees for our client....but I don't think he knows that our paralegal's billing rate is higher than mine (2nd year, and she's been here for like 30 years).
Anyone know what happens to a two-party shareholder agreement when a third shareholder enters the picture (by a shareholder transfer diluting the original 2 shareholders)? That shareholder agreement is silent on what happens. Now that there are 3 shareholders is it void?
Tips for returning to work post-sickness? Whole family has been juggling RSV, flu, and Covid for awhile and I’m trying to get back to work and feel a lot of anxiety about it. I lateraled a few months ago, so I’m still on a high learning curve and don’t know the best way to approach getting back into a rhythm. I WFH, fwiw, but haven’t clocked in for almost a week due to all the illness, hospital and urgent care visits, etc.
What’s considered an acceptable realization rate? I’m currently sitting at 70%, but it would be around 85% excluding my contingency files.
I’m interested in taking on a Pro Bono case through a nonprofit org, so should I disclose that I’m taking the case to my current employer (in house)? The case has no overlap with the field my company is in and I’ll be doing the work off the clock.
Thinking about my current options: Would you rather be a “service partner” at a big firm, or a partner with your own book at a small firm? Why?
Average billables for Foley and Lardner?
Any attorneys here practicing or have experience in Delaware? Considering moving there for an opportunity with a small Delaware firm in their litigation department. They seem very white shoe, not very diverse, and do not seem to have many women. Is it a mistake to move to Delaware and to a small localized firm? A lot of judges seem to come from the firm.
Any experience with Delaware lawyers or firms? Anything to watch out for or red flags?
Let’s talk about biglaw annual evaluations. EVERY 1st year associate I spoke to said they got stellar evaluations. (I promised I only asked close colleagues and in a non-gunner way). Is it normal for every 1st year to get great evaluations? Do evaluations only become serious/critical as a midlevel?
This may not be the right forum for this question, but what are actual legitimate reasons for wanting the option to buy an AR15 without restrictions? It can't be tradition, hunting, or sport, so what? I'm not being sarcastic, I'm just curious. I live in a bubble where I don't interact with alot of people of different viewpoints, let alone know any gun owners. Is it just because you can?
I took the UBE this past July for a second state. I didn’t think it was that hard. While a Freind of mine who’s 100x smarter than me thought she failed it. I’m starting to wonder if I under thought it.
Howdy, is court investigator material discoverable? Are they able to be deposed? Looking in the code and not seeing anything. Happy Friday!

I thought this was going to be a crisis or failure post but I was pleasantly wrong! Congrats on the hard work and accomplishment.
Trial by fire really is the best way to learn even though it can be terrifying.
Congrats!! Enjoy your weekend. You’ve earned it :)
What a strange post. The OP tag is counsel, but identifies as a first year, and the ending was a happy one.
I’m actually an associate, but when I started at my firm I was briefly part time so I was called counsel. Never updated my fishbowl because I like to stand out from all the other associates 🙃
