You don't, they will be offended. Just explain factually they are creating a shortfall, and if they arrive at the conclusion on their own, good for them. If not, probably can't be helped.
Not client material
If you follow what the Bible says, you will bring a tithe to the church. This 10% of your income. Not whatever extra you have. They will not and should not adjust their beliefs to fit a financial plan. I promise you that they do not see this as a luxury giving. They will see it as Obedience. You should ask them about there beliefs and let them explain why it’s so important.
You don’t and you shouldn’t. You lay out all the numbers and let them discover it for themselves. Don’t ever suggest against/question someone’s faith.
Some people are so poor and destitute, all they have is money. Everything honorable and good comes from above. We are commanded to be hilarious, cheerful givers. The Lord always provides for our needs. The Lord requires our first fruit. I admire their obedience to His will.
I spent 11 years doing financial and logistical support in Central Europe for a missions organization. We got paid the same as everyone else in the non-profit organization. We tithed and invested. Because we made wise spending decisions there was enough to do both. Other people with two (like us) or fewer kids left the field in those years saying “they don’t pay us enough to survive here.” I don’t believe that two people with full-time employment in the USA can’t provide for a family and tithe. It all comes down to living within your means.
1) they live paycheck to paycheck and are hardly able to have any excess from month to month.
2) they give 541 dollars to their very large church every month.
I am in the south east. Aka the Bible belt.
How do I suggest they stop giving money away to this medium sized mega church and pay down debt/save for retirement....?
At the risk of sounding like a preacher and not an fa, the Bible indicates that it is wise to save prov 21.20. in addition, prov 22 7 says it's wise to be out of debt. In addition, I don't see anywhere in scripture where borrowing so you can tithe, but isn't that what they are doing when they take on payments and then give to the church?
I’m sorry, but people actually believe this stuff? I’m very much a Christian, but common sense tells you that the Bible, which consists of stories told over hundreds of years through many people, is bound to have some self serving attributes to the story teller.... women must be obedient, tithe to the church... are you telling me that those things weren’t put in there to be able to have women do what you want, and so the church always has money? People couldn’t have mentally been all that different back then, and look at today... our politicians do it to us now. Back then it was the church. Now it’s Washington.
OP - You don’t. Giving is a priority for many true Christians. You failed to ask what’s most important to them. Everyone has different priorities and goals.
Do they have any assets? Sounds like they won’t be clients. If they work to 70 and take SSI then it could work?
You really just seem personally bitter they are giving to a church. Tell them to give 10% of gains, if they have a problem with that, suggest meeting with there pastor and have him tell them. As far as medical bills, what's the hurry? They are often 0% and can be paid in very low monthly payments. Lower there monthly payments. If they are low on money and income they can sometimes, be forgiven by the hospital.
You can’t!
Do they have a home or life insurance policies? If so, perhaps cut the tithing in half but endow assets after death. This way you honor their priority to give and improve their cash flow.
Suggest they find a way to make more money
I did not fail to ask them what is important to them because it is my job to understand it. They don't pay for much other than car, phone, regular utilities, and food. No cable/wifi etc. They live very frugal but have lower I comes. And they take that income and give a large chunk to their church instead of pay down their medical bills.
They want to retire but SS isn't gonna cover it. The only identifiable extra in their budget is their donations to the church.
Without knowing the situation, they need to accelerate paying off debt before they give and invest, and yes, they sound like the crappiest clients, but if you want to help them out, I hope your reward is great in heaven
Unfortunately you can’t help everyone. By no means am I knocking their religion, but people that short themselves but pay their church large amounts of money that they can’t afford, just aren’t going to be good for business.
$541 per month x 12 mos = $6500 annually
That implies their income is $65,000 or less.
The size of church is immaterial. Their obedience to God is material.
I’d echo much of what has been said here. You can’t help everyone and this sounds like a case where you tried but their situation doesn’t allow it. Once they get 3-6 months of expenses set aside in cash and their debt in check or receive an inheritance....then it’s game on.
How can you possibly make money from these folks?
