Make sure you document everything. Also, see if you can save those videos as well. If you are in the union, talk to them as well. You also, need to show those videos to the police because that student is dangerous.
It seems like you have a lawsuit, district, family, city...

Learn jui-jitsu.
Seriously, having the skills to know at a minimum you can buy yourself some time without getting hurt or hurting someone else is a real confidence booster which helps when kids get wild.
Plus it knocks some of the fear out of the entire experience.
Are you surprised? Sorry, that happened to you. New norms
...sadly
File a grievance for safety in the workplace. If you feel traumatized, get a mental health provider to sign you out for a bit. It gets their attention.
And - it will get you a new district next year. The southern states do not play like that. I'd you are seen as difficult - you can and will be on an improvement plan within weeks- then not offered a contract next year.
School systems in the Deep South are run like indentured serfdoms. Just move!
You can suspend the child from your classroom.
I would not be able to do this in my district.
Just because you are a teacher you do not give up your rights. At my campus there is always the question "Do want us to handle it or law enforcement?" You were battered by a student and you can file a police report about the incident.
This extremely alarming especially for just middle schoolers. These kids can only be 12/13. What issues could they have that would be that serious
Crazy has no age restrictions
I’m sorry that you had to deal with that. We had a kid vaping in the bathroom. A teacher walked in and he ran out of the bathroom and down the stairs. He slipped at the bottom of the stairs, slid on the floor and almost knocked me over. He was not disciplined. We have another special Ed student who brought a BB gun to school in his car, turned a lighter into a flame thrower and used it on the bus and threatened to bring a gun to school & shoot it up. This student has been in school this whole time because of his “disability “. The school has been trying to expel him but the family has an attorney and the attorney says it’s a “manifestation of his disability “. Ridiculous what is happening in schools today!
If a student threatens anyone it’s a BIG deal in my district. A threatening assessments is scheduled w parents and student and student is suspended. If parents refuse, we keep the student out of school until parents comply.
I do find w special ed students, the 10 day suspension window often drives their decision because they don’t want to go to an MDR (which actually is no big deal).
Really? What county
I’m not surprised at all. We’ve had pregnant teachers punched in the stomach. Another had ice melt thrown in her face and eyes. There was nothing done about either attack. 15 days ISD is unfortunately better than you will get in most districts. Sad times we teach in.
Oh my goodness! I could only imagine how afraid she must be to return to work each day. Why are teachers not seen as human beings with real feelings? Everyone disregards our health and safety
Doesn’t your state have risk assessments? If a student threatened gun violence they would have social services evaluating them and even can have police search the home for weapons.
I was going to say this also. At the point where there are threats on students' lives, the police should be involved and the parents should be held accountable for the fact this child even has a gun
I keep hearing stories like this and still the question that always comes to mind is how are children getting access to guns? Why is this not a major issue?

Yep.
My uncle had a gun safe. You'd get smacked for looking at too long.
Still don't know what was in it.
Just think, how would they handle it if the situation were reversed? Protect YOURSELF.
This is the new restorative justice practice.
Teachers are disposable assets. Cannon fodder. Especially if there is any hint of a lawsuit that could be involved. Teachers would be thrown under the bus and run over twice.
The kids at my school don’t even get out of school suspension for fighting usually just 3 days in school suspension
I had two girls jump another and I pulled one
off the other and got hit and they only received 2 days ISS and stayed home one day because the parent thought they were supposed to receive OSS
Yeah no this isn’t on me. I was just standing there nearby and happened to step in the isle and he pushed me to get to the other student. I don’t break up fights. It’s not worth the trouble
So strange, I was just telling students a story today about how something similar happened years ago. (Student grabbed me and tossed me aside to get to a student she saw behind me.)
And yeah, when it happened to me I wrote it up as assault and was informed that it didn't qualify as assault because she didn't mean to assault me, the injury to me was just collateral damage from her intended attack on another student.
Did the district tell you it didn't count as assault, or was that the police?
Because that absolutely is an assault. Intention is not an element of assault, except to determine the degree of the charge.
Document. Email admin and save the emails. Express your concerns. Save all that. When you finally have had enough, take it to the school board via an attorney.
Document everything and make sure you've notified administration of the video.
