I hate that fake “urgency” and refuse to give in to it. I’m debating switching industries. Good luck to you
Why is everything urgent? Lack of planning on someone else’s behalf.
Everything being urgent is fake news. As a PM, I push back and ask what’s driving it every time someone tells me something urgent. If it’s not on the hotsheet or status I sent out that day, I don’t know about it and it’s NMFP! ....but this mentality has also gotten me in trouble too LOL
I started having meetings and correspondence with my “urgent requestors,” together. Let them all agree on what the priorities and the timelines for those priorities are. And the meeting doesn’t end until they all agree and sign off on the scope.
If anything, it’s fun to watch them rip each other apart. 😙☕️
I have been there not so long ago. I even had to take a leave of absence for 3 months. The thing that helped me the most to deal with the “urgent” things when I came back to work is to care a little less and get perspective on what’s happening. I’m not saying that it’s an easy thing to do..! But work is only one aspect of life and we often have to remind ourselves. Focus on what you can control and don’t spend energy on what you can’t. And take the time to plan your to do list, prioritize, and take one thing at a time...!
Analytics. I’ve always enjoyed the quantitative side and felt it was a natural transition.
☝🏼 PM - totally agree with you that not everything is urgent. But this sums up my biggest frustration with PMs. Instead of being helpful and proactive and figuring out how to accomplish something, you immediately say no and push back on timing. This isn’t all PMs, some are truly amazing, but many feel more like a road block to getting shit done. It takes more effort for account to “stay on” PMs to manage and move projects forward vs the other way around. Ugh.
MD1 what are you doing now? Curious and looking for inspiration to gtfo.
