Consulting Exit Opportunities

Had a mild heart attack according to my cardiologist. He says its due to stress, travel and poor diet. Advised me to get out of consulting. I need to still support my family and pay bills but most of all need to get out of strenuous SAP. Looking for serious advice here. If I get out of logistics and supply chain, can I still have a career? Is taking a desk job in SAP security a good move? May have to retool myself which I am happy to. Just need a steady income from a 9-5. I’ve known only SAP

OP please take care of yourself and health and get out of consulting ASAP. Any job would be better than this. Your family needs you to be healthy and happy. I really hope you feel better! And always remember, if a door closes better doors open! As long as you are in a good health, everything is possible! My dad died of a heart attack at 50 yo and it was very hard on my family. He was always stressing about work.

Health should always be your number 1 consideration - nothing matters if you’re dead. For the stress and travel part, maybe try discuss internally with your Manager/Partners to see if they can reallocate more local work to you, reduce your workload or pull you from some clients. Someone else working in SAP might know better, but the field to my knowledge is quite broad and various opportunities (including those with less strenuous hours) are available if you are willing to reskill. And for the diet part, the onus would largely fall on you in terms of managing what you eat / finding professional help in doing so. Hope everything improves with time!

Why don’t you just fix your diet and start meditating? Seems like a cop out to blame your issues solely on the job

There is nothing wrong with my diet and I checked with a nutritionist. It was sleeping 4 hrs and working the rest of the time for a few months in a row. Was a shit project poorly managed and we had to manage everything downstream

I can understand you , have been doing SAP for last 16 years

Can you do logistics and supply chain outside of consulting? Would that be less stressful or is it pretty much across the board in that field?

Consider SAP in a different country with a healthier work culture like Germany where you won’t work weekends and will have 30 days annual holiday.

I think the SAP shift works. Even if it stings in the short term, you need to quickly see a reduction in your overall stressors. Maybe in retooling, you'll find something else that ranges from bearable to you really like it. All you need right now is something that isn't an ABSOLUTE slog and gives you better hrs.

OP,get out of consulting and try finding a industry Job? or as a SAP trainer /less strenuous role..as others have pointed out nothing matters more than health.also why not take your logistics and supply chain expertise and try for a BA role, anything that’s technology agnostic/business oriented? Stay strong, there are plenty of options to explore..

Travel will be reduced so your stress level may go down at least from that aspect. Take care of your diet first, get your weight, cholesterol, heart in check. The new job can cause stress too, I’d look into adopting new ways of managing stress. Have you ever tried meditating? Do you exercise regularly? Etc
