Screener or callback? Good luck! Don’t panic if it takes a couple weeks. It’s more common this type of year for a firm to move slowly.

Well it was the first interview and it was with the 2 partners of the group…. So however you categorize that

Same here! Met with two partners and waiting to hear back. I thought it went well…

I was previously a specialist and now I’m pivoting to general corp.

For those who went from private practice to in-house, what are some questions you wish you asked during interviews? I'm coming from a large regional firm, 9 YOE as a patent attorney, just had a first interview for a Senior IP counsel position at a profitable R+D company. Just wondering what I should be looking for or asking as far as red flags, because things seem really good so far.

Trying to figure out next career move. Im 26. What path would you chose?

1. Currently: Senior associate in GE @ secondaries firm. Path to partner. Will have $1b AUM with 3rd fund raised. WLB is great - avg 40 hrs/week. Culture is rough b/c partner dynamics. Leadership is uninspiring. 5 days a week in office with rare work remote option. Don’t love only doing secondaries.

2. Move to VC or another GE shop, one that does more primary. Find more inspiring people to work around, better mentors.

I have to make my decision by the end of next week, so I’d appreciate some input and opinions on which offer I should take.

Imagine you are a senior associate who is respected in the department but spend almost all your time working for a particularly powerful rainmaker. If you stayed in the firm, you’d likely be partner in a year, as you have the rainmaker’s support. If said rainmaker leaves to another firm, your future at the firm becomes less certain. If you go with rainmaker, what are the chances the new firm makes you partner off the bat, assuming you are valuable to the rainmaker?

Can someone explain to me why biglaw firms don’t “review up” and have junior/mid level associates evaluate senior associates? I understand partners have no interest in hearing the minions gripe, but wouldn’t it be valuable to know if your senior associates—seeking to enter your partnership are good managers and not complete a**holes? I’ve had so many projects mismanaged by clueless senior associates lately and it seems like juniors/mid levels bear the brunt of it, but there’s no recourse.

Anyone else who feels that they want to step into the more analytical/executive/operational/financial side of business?

I feel that as a corporate lawyer, you’re mostly doing the necessary details to carry out someone else’s decisions (= EG the boring part of business). The most "strategic" advice you give is perhaps advising on a choice between transaction models.

Would only a law degree and big law transactional experience be sufficient to go into more traditional business roles?

Biggest issue in BL: The increasing partner to associate ratio. Out of greed, the partners only expand the partnership when it can be done without reducing each partner’s personal income. 40 years ago, you became a partner in your firm if you just wanted it. Not anymore. Firm revenues grow, while associates get an ever smaller percentage and less training What used to be a "pupillage" (as they still call it in England) to one day become partner, has become pure exploitation for personal gains.
