How is this entitled? Dude (or dudette) wants to know how to get a better offer at their dream job? Why is that entitled? Get that $$$$ OP!

like

A1 you are an analyst and already tired of posts like this? May want to adjust your tolerance threshold since this is par for the course in consulting.

likefunny

Just to clarify...this is not a dream job. Interviewing at two companies and prefer one, just looking for some negotiation tips. Thanks!

Fair

A dream job can quickly be ruined if you find out the company doesn’t value you enough to pay you on par with your peers.

like

1) do not be the first one to disclose a number. The recruiter will push, but do not cave. They have access to tons of research data and should already have a general idea of how much you currently make. 2) go in with the attitude that they need you more than you need them 3) be prepared to walk away if they won’t offer you what you want. If they really want you, they will reach back out.

Depends on if it is consulting or industry, what’s the promotion/ growth cycle. Please check if it is your dream job at your dream company too. Congrats on order and good luck!

Thank you! It’s consulting, but it’ll be first time (hopefully) negotiating an offer so all advice is helpful

In a similar situation. Have an offer from a top firm and they are not nudging on the level even with a competing offer.

I’m tired of seeing entitled posts like this

*gets offered dream job* *rejects it because it doesn’t pay enough* This makes no sense to me at all

I clearly didn’t say dream job...

like

I consider my job a privilege 🤷🏼‍♂️ it is fun and it stretches me mentally and it pays enough - why does greed need to enter into that? Maybe it’s because I came from poverty and know what it’s truly like to worry about money - I really don’t mean to be judgemental - I think my reply came across that way. It’s just with my life experiences I consider myself extremely lucky and if I ever got my dream job I would do it for free because I know eventually my contribution would be valued at it’s full extent.

A1, I appreciate your good attitude about it. I think we are all assuming you’re probably on the younger side, since your perspective is quite idealistic. Once you have a mortgage, family, or generally other financial responsibilities, you’re not afforded the level of frivolity you’re describing

like

Same concerning poverty but as time moves forward people have different bills and responsibilities. Though it may not exclude them from ultimately taking the position, it may dampen the occasion as you readjust to accommodate the position. Why not wish for the best outcome or ask how to put yourself in a position to achieve the best outcome?

Exaclty that...kids would play in the mlb for free. Adults with families and responsibilities wont. Ignore this guy OP get your money. I came from very low income family as well A1

I would just collect evidence on your worth from previous jobs. Eg “I have already done xyz things or have xyz skills that you’re looking for, so I feel like $$ would be a fair number since I come into the gate already excelling at these things. Would you be able to meet that number?” And of course, if it’s a good company, it never hurts to just ask! “Ideally I was hoping for xyz position / salary since I have [previous experience / comparable salary / if you can’t say either of these just stop and salary and wait for them to say something. Use silence to force them to say something!! People get uncomfortable by silence and then just start talking], would you be able to do that for me?” Read through Alison’s (askamanager.org) tips on this!

ACN SM here. I did the math yesterday and my annual base salary/no. of hours worked per week (either actively working or stressing about work) comes to peanuts! I did this bcos an NGO has made me an offer that is significantly lower than my base, but the hours are more reasonable - so suffice it to say my hourly rate is better. I'm torn.. lower salary/better WLB vs more $$$ but no life

Completely bombed an interview yesterday, and I’m ok with that. I realized how wildly unprepared I was and how I can make it better for the next ones I have lined up! It’s ok to fail and learn from mistakes. Also my kids were running around in the background so hopefully that wasn’t the reason 🤣

Would appreciate feedback on this offer. Just got promoted to M1 in FDD at EY. Manager FP&A at software unicorn. Base $115k, bonus 7.5%, approx $45k RSU’s vesting over 4 years. Work life balance is allegedly great, path to promotion to SM in 6-12 months. Comp feels like more of a lateral move but company culture seems great.

Hi everyone, I need your advice. I've been interviewing with MBB and Tier 2 firms over the past few years. However I was never well prepared for case studies. I now decided to take 6-8 months and seriously prepare for cases/mental math and try them again next year. I currently have Victor Chengs book and few others. What else would you recommend for me? How can i lay out a plan to study? Any source you can recommend free or paid?
