Had mid-year reviews last week. As a senior reviewing the staff, management said no staff are ready for senior promotion. Doesn’t this look bad on management that they can’t promote from within?

So management is saying not a single staff is ready? Does BDO usually promote to senior after 2 staff years. Last year no one that was a staff 2 didn't make it to senior in my group.

Maybe they don't want to give the senior raise or title? Afraid people might leave? Sounds fishy to me.

like

Maybe that is common during mid year, but likely to be considered ready by end of the year?

Weird as they are recruiting for risk at all levels? You would think they would want to promote from within?

I heard that internal candidates have much lower salary ranges for promotions / transferring teams. So much so that some people will leave the company a year just to come back to a more competitive offer.

I am in the running for a 2 band level promotion - if / when it gets to salary discussions, should I still try to negotiate? What are peoples thoughts? I would be going from an entry level role for 1 year to a senior role, but I still want a fair compensation compared to other hires.
