I feel like these kinds of questions are going to become more and more common as we de-privatized health care. Creates an interesting moral dilemma similar to that of a person’s economic status being the driver behind healthcare availability.

like

We aren’t de-prioritizing healthcare, though. Will never happen in this country.

Idaho is in crisis standards of care right now. Resources, e.g., an ICU bed, go to those patients most likely to survive. Other patients will be treated with less effective methods or, in dire cases, given pain relief and other palliative care. If those who are vaccinated are most likely to survive because they have been vaccinated, then so be it.

This article doesn't even mention one of the most critical pieces of triage: likelihood of survival. COVID patients going into the ICU are unlikely to survive regardless of vaccination status. The survival rates are made worse by being unvaccinated. It's completely fair to prioritize vaccinated (or unvaccinated, really) patients with other medical issues over unvaccinated COVID patients in a triage situation

Healthcare providers are already doing this in the most hard-hit areas, like Idaho right now. Nurses are choosing who gets beds and vents. It’s a natural by-product of limited resources (clinicians, beds, vents) and high demand (almost entirely non-vaxed sick people).

like

But where do you draw the line once you start prioritizing vaccinated ICU patients ahead of unvaccinated? What about smokers, the morbidly obese, or drug users? Each of those groups are suffering the ill effects of life choices. Do they also go to the back of the line behind non smokers, the BMI appropriate, etc? Serious question, because when you decide to start prioritizing -or rationing- medical care based on the results of life decisions, there’s a long list of stupid choices that rank right up there with the non-vaccinated.

BCG1 I could be wrong but I read that nurses in Italy were asking people for their occupation to know who to triage (hopefully twitch streamers were behind teachers)

The lack of self awareness as to how capacity stripping has been the core consulting firm advise to care firms for 3 decades now.

Health professionals gave an oath to save all lives. If a doctor discriminates, technically their medical license should be revoked. People gotta stop using doctors as political tools.

like

Triage care means you have to prioritize who gets helped. Should those that caused the ICUs to become overwhelmed be the ones to receive care before those that didn't?

like

Is care withheld from people who smoke? Or consume alcohol? Or drive over the speed limit? Or don’t exercise daily? Or consume fatty foods?

like

I believe their insurance can be more expensive, it’s a terrible comparison however because we’ve never had a situation where there were so many smokers or whatever that they took all the emergency care beds. If that is the situation and they can be identified, then yes, I would be for first caring and giving the bed to those who aren’t killing themselves than smokers. You can call that withheld care, but you have to withhold it from someone if you’re full

You don’t prioritize triage based on preventative measures, you prioritize on how a patient currently presents. Everyone arguing over this is just ridiculous. The last thing you take in account when someone comes in sick is “well, what did you do beforehand to prevent this?”

It depends. Is health care a human right like has been claimed? Or only a benefit is you agree with those in power?

I was with the CMO of a very large health system last night at dinner. He said that anyone who thinks care rationing hasn’t been happening in rural counties for months due to covid is living in la la land. Wake up, people.

Looking to transition to an L&E based firm in the future to maybe go in house down the road. The first couple of years of my career I was at a Plaintiff's firm where I only did employment law. I moved to another firm because I was paid nothing and did insurance defense (a couple employment cases) but mostly general liability. I’m the one whose ex won’t pay for college - and I have an update. My ex texted me today that he and his wife are buying our son a car (!!) for Christmas. On the one hand, it’s one less expense for me. On the other hand, my ex won’t pay for college and he owes me at least $10K for previous medical expenses, but he can find money for a car - which is a “fun” expense that will get him brownie points with our son. Whatever - my son benefits, but talk about a “Disneyland Dad.” Ugh.

Joined D in August. For insurance I opted for a few addons amounting to 26K to be paid from my end. In my previous Organization, they would deduct these addon amounts in 4/8/12 equal instalments. In D they deducted the whole part in this months salary. Does D not have the option to deduct in instalments? The in hand salary was low and I can barely cover my fixed financial commitments and basic needs.

I can’t function. I don’t have energy to do the smallest things. All I want to do is sleep. I don’t have to feel pain or deal with life when I sleep. I left my job because of this. I have a history of clinical depression and this is the worst episode I’ve ever experienced. I made an appointment with a therapist and to get on meds. Do I qualify for state disability even though I quit my job?
