I've had several drills before. For first timers, that reaction was valid.
In our school, we always announce that they are drills. Very simply, we can not have people breaking windows to escape, or even running out of the building.
So no, the drills are not as realistic as they could be. However, a school shooting is an unsafe situation, there is no way to make a realistic drill safe.
Exactly this!
I hate the fact that we need to do this here. When i taught abroad, it was never a thing there. Here, we have to constantly think about what dangers our children face on the daily. We never know what tragedy or maniac might be lurking around the corner. So frightening

First one? We’ve been doing them for years that way. My youngest is in high school and he doesn’t know school without active shooter drills.
I bet everyone feels so much more prepared. Efficacy rate: 100
I felt more prepared when I called to the attention of the admins that their own policies for substitutes made it almost impossible for them to correctly execute the steps for the drills.
When I learned they adapted their policies and ensured those additional needs were addressed we were all safer during the various drills, including active shooter ones. You cannot be over prepared in my opinion. However, it is very easy to be under prepared and out of practice.
I'm surprised it's your first, we've been doing them for a long time now unfortunately. Never gets easier

Wow that sounds so terrifying! Did you know that surprise drills would be happening? It seems like a very traumatizing way to let you know they’d be a surprise by just having the first one be unexpected. We practice lockdown drills but they’re a drill - the principal comes on the announcements and says “we are entering a lockdown drill”.
As a teacher who has no kids of her own I don’t exactly know how to explain lockdown drills. I don’t want to scare kids but I don’t want them to be unprepared if they find themselves in that situation. If you have elementary kids of your own…. Do you explain what lockdown drills are and why we practice them? I teach third grade.
If you read your school's emergency plans you will also find the number of times in a year the school intends to practice each type of drill.
It's actually listed in the plans along with exactly what is going to come over the intercom and if you take the time to review those things with your students and tell them that you practice so everyone knows what to do to be safe. Then everyone in your classroom is on the same page.
Sorry, the principal scared you and your students but this was always part of my first week back to school planning and preemptive measures could have reduced the jump scare when it occurred. Please review the emergency plans with your students they are not too young to understand how to do them or why we practice them.
THis would seriously stress me out. I think I would have massive anxiety if we didn't know about the drill in advance. I am sure parents are going to be mad.
The school year started mid-August for us and we’ve already had two REAL lockdowns at our school. We’ve practiced them before so most knew what to expect and do, except for the kindergarteners. Everything went well. Since the little ones didn’t know what was happening they were calm. Some of our older kids were crying but still did what they trained to do. They hear the news, they were scared what happened in Uvalde was about to happen to them.
Aww. I feel so bad for these innocent kids. I hope these drills remain as drills. This is really heart breaking.
