Has ADHD affected your effectiveness in your speech and communication? How have you grappled with those issues in social settings as well as work?

I have to consciously remind myself to slow down and speak at a more measured pace. My mind is racing sometimes to the point where I trip over my words trying to get everything out so quickly. This doesn't serve anyone well, so I've learned to take a breath and slow myself down. It's a work in progress and some days are better than others, but I think I've come a long way.

like

I’m so do that too! And omg I’m so detailed when talking that people get lost in the details but I’m like ? Why can’t you follow me lol. But I’m trying to slooowww down and think before I speak but it’s so hard

like

I can write words so well, but when I have to come up with words in a social situation, I feel worthless. I am a decent listener, but I don't know what to say sometimes. I try to join in on conversations & not feel inadequate for not being able to start my own. I feel like I've still got a long way to go though.

like

Definitley pausing more, giving myself time - not blasting through it like I used to. I try to keep a glass of water near me so I can take a break and drink water as a way to like, calm myself down haha

Yes! I never attributed this to my ADHD, but I find myself stumbling over my words and stuttering a lot more when I am off medication or notice my symptoms getting bad. I think it's just that my brain is moving too fast for my mouth or something.

like

Speaking and writing are certainly two of the tougher areas I've struggled with my whole life. I'll forget whole fractions of sentences because of the pace my brain works at.

like

Yes! My brain works too fast when I'm delivering speeches. I always remind myself to slow down or pause every after a few sentences so my speech can catch up to my brain. I also build Q&As from time to time throughout ny speech.

like

By being kind to myself and taking pauses Vs using filler words. Also really being patient with myself and thinking before I speak

like

YES! I always think before I speak and I give myself time to think of a thoughtful and educated answer.

Yes but I always have to remind myself to be an active listener, be patient, and wait until the other person is done with their thoughts. A joy that came out of working remotely was putting myself on mute so I don’t butt into someone else’s thoughts. In the office, I can’t put myself on mute, so that’s where the patience is crucial when communicating

like

Slowing down is key. I also notice that my brain can make unlikely connections, which may seem like non-sequiturs. I used to get very frustrated with my husband for not following me, but he is NT, so I am learning to be understanding. Now, if I get a confused look from the person with whom I am speaking, I will ask if there is something I can clarify.

At another extreme, sometimes I find myself at a complete loss for words. Rather than panic, I try to say, “I will have to think about that.”

like

Wouldn't say so much it's had an effect in my social situations, those seem to be pretty fine overall. I'm able to get my main points across but I'm worried everyone is staring at me while the wheels spin...

like

It hasn't. Luckily for me, upper management has been very supportive since I told them about my ADHD. Also, I always keep with me a checklist and I try crossing tasks from it every 30 min to an hour.

I’m going to talk with my psychiatrist at my next appointment, but I’m curious if others have had issues with Vyvanse no longer working. I’ve been taking it for about 15 months. It lost it’s effectiveness for me a few months ago, so my psychiatrist increased my dosage to the max. That helped slightly, but it’s back to no longer working. I usually don’t take it on weekends and even had a 10-day period in August where I didn’t take it.

If you’ve had this issue, I’m curious to know what you did.

If I want to go to an AA meeting do I just show up? What happens my first time? Do I have to quit drinking before I go to one/ be committed to quitting before going? How many people are at these? Not a daily drinker, but blackout when I do. Thx.

Pharmacies are saying it may be another couple of months before they expect adderall to be back. Anyone else having this issue? Was on Adderall 10mg twice daily. Now on Ritalin 10mg twice daily. I just don't have the same level of focus!
