Yes, me. I was deciding between two great offers at AmLaw25 firms. I, for some strange reason, took the one offering less money because I thought it would be a better “environment.” As soon as I accepted, I knew I did the wrong thing. Both firms gave me two weeks to consider, and as we were rolling up on the second week, the firm I went with was strong-arming me and making me feel guilty for taking so long to tell them yes. I should have known that this isn’t how it was supposed to be. I didn’t realize it then, but looking back, they did some not great things to rush me along.
The other firm was filled with really nice partners when I interviewed. They went all out hosting a lunch for me (they were an east coast firm opening up an SF office). Everyone was talking about how they would support me, etc. I still regret not taking that offer.
Needless to say, I didn’t last very long at the firm I said yes to. I say if you’re really regretting your decision, call the firm that that you turn down and see if you can still get your offer. Just say something along the lines of having additional time to reconsider, you really want to go with them. If they reinstate your offer, you can withdraw from the first firm. I will advise you making sure the firm will reinstate your offer before doing anything.
No need to feel regret. You don’t owe these people anything. They’ll interview someone else. Focus on you and your goals.
If you feel you took the wrong offer, don’t. You did what you thought was best. Time will tell if it was the right decision, and if it wasn’t you can always leave.
Thanks, more of feeling like I took the wrong offer.
What bout the one you turned down is making you feel regret?
I think mainly because I did more diligence on the one I turned down and got to know those people better, and then the offer I took I followed my gut but didn’t necessarily do as much diligence.
