Has anyone actually prioritized getting 7-8 hours of sleep? How’d that work out?

Yes, I view it as generally non-negotiable. It makes a massive difference.

Bed at 9:30. Wake at 6. Try it.

This. And people know this about me. So if something is needed EOD we talk about whether that’s a real deadline and likely if I need to stay up I try to get a nap in (thanks wfh). But yes. This is my sleep schedule except for I wake up around 630.

like

🙋🏻‍♀️ I’ve only had to compromise for more than a day or two a handful of times in 5 years. It often comes at the expense of working out or having “me” time, but it’s worth it 100%. I also view it as non-negotiable absent a true emergency.

I prioritize sleep at night over work. Full stop.

like

Absolutely. I work a pretty standard 830-500pm or so and make it a point not to do any work from home in the evenings unless it’s absolutely necessary, which is maybe twice a month. I don’t even like to check my emails on my phone once I leave work. You have to prioritize your own health above all else. A job is just a job and 99% of things can wait til the next day. Grind it out during the day so you can relax at night.

I prioritize sleep because I honestly cannot function as well with less so it’s just something I’ve prioritized. If I need to work late etc and get things done I still do but I make time to rest on weekends and catch up when I’m spent.

With wfh, I get 8-9 hours every night, non negotiable (unless there’s a true emergency).

It is rare that I don't get 7-8 hours sleep, so works pretty well for me.

like

I’ve always done that. Since I’d work until the job was done, it sometimes meant arriving late morning in the office. It really annoyed some people and impacted my career for sure. At the same time, I look a lot younger than most of my peers, don’t have any health issues, and I still made partner.

like

Amazing. I love it. You’ll have some FOMO at first, but once you get in the groove - it’s the best.

like

Oh yeah. That way I’m well rested when the senior associates start harassing me about all of the assignments I didn’t have time to finish.

It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Also, the most important truism I learned about law firm life is that it never gets better as you progress. If you’re unhappy and burned out at your current level, those problems won’t disappear as you become more senior. In fact, they’ll probably get worse. Prioritize your physical and mental health, and if that’s not possible in your current environment, start thinking about switching.

Yep. My 8 hours of sleep per night is non negotiable. If I don’t get it, I am inefficient, sloppy, and careless during the day. I’ve managed to avoid burnout during high billing months so long as I get good sleep.

like

What if you are one of those people who is very productive late at night?

Then wake up later. It’s easier now with WFH.

I’m trying to change my ways but no, never. I’ve been this way all my life though. I rarely sleep more than 5-6 hours a night. Not that it’s always because I’m working late but just doing whatever. Sometimes I feel I get my first wind of the day at like 10 PM lol...but really. Anyway yes I know it’s not healthy etc...

Yes I almost always get that amount of sleep.

Yes every night except for rare occurrences. Almost never have work that would keep me up and my wife and I have very compatible sleep schedules. As someone else said, it’s non-negotiable. I learned in college not to sacrifice sleep (had a habit of pulling all nighters and suffered for it) and reinforced that in law school.

I usually get 7.5-8 hrs of sleep but it’s on a later schedule. I go to bed anywhere between 11pm to 2am. Does it make a huge difference to shift that schedule up?

No partners posting in here 😂😂

I hate all of you young a-holes whom effortlessly sleep through the night. I used to sleep ridiculous amounts. 9 hours, sometimes 10. One summer in college, more than 11 hours.

As I close in on 50, my sleep patterns are a wreck. Stress, a very active mind, too much caffeine, too much booze, a wife with different sleep patterns, kids, a dog. Jesus, it’s a miracle I sleep at all. Rarely as much as 8 hours, soften as little at 6-7, not infrequently less than that.
