Has anyone attempted to or actually yoloed by billing 2k hours for the year then just going awol on an extended vacation until the next year? Put that unlimited vacation time and those minimum hours to the test. Honestly can't see why I should essentially do work for free after hitting hours.

Depends on how early in the year you hit 2k and how busy the group is. If you hit 2k in October and everyone else has too, nah you have to keep working. If you hit 2k at Thanksgiving and no one else has? I wouldn’t raise my hand for more work on Dec. 15th if you know what I mean.

Ok, wanting reasonable hours is wrong and not working non stop= lack of social skills

We have one person in the group who is known for doing this. Nobody has any hard feelings against that person. They work like hell during the year then take all of December off almost every year. It works for them, so we are all happy for them.

This is the answer I like to hear. What market/is it a full market laying firm (or just name firm if you are comfortable doing so)?

Lol, a second year tried this a few years ago and got fired late February. Only he was surprised that no one would staff him after he disappeared before Thanksgiving and didn’t come back until the new year.

This is what is called a “career-limiting move.” That said, I do not expect you to put your hand up after you hit 2,000 and I also do not expect you to be in the office the last two weeks in December (I’m in litigation). That’s what I did as an associate. I also keep an eye on who is way over or under pace and try to staff accordingly to avoid the problem of Associate A done by Sept and Associate B way off pace.

I always take the last week of December and the 1st week of January off. Always. If I were you I’d peace out on the 15th and come back on the 10th or so

Yep lit associate that will be on a closing at the end of December for the first time. I can’t tell you how depressing it is knowing I won’t have the holidays off…five months in advance.

For free? Usually there is some carrot in the form of tiered bonuses for exceeding your target. My target is 1650 (Biglaw but not a US office) but there are bonuses for every 50 extra hours over that target.

like

Really? Interesting though I imagine people at Latham end up working more on average than many at 2k hour firms regardless.

Tried and failed. Billed 1950 by late sept and ended up billing 2300

like

Because you would not be a team player. I’m sure you would fire an associate who did that too lol.

Do no jobs entail team work? I find it hard to understand how working at a large firm, presumably with partners and other associates on every matter, is anything other than a team effort. Just because there is always additional work doesn’t mean that the people you work with aren’t your team. If you don’t care about them, that’s a different story. But don’t try to cover that up with shallow logic.

One year on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, I was leaving my office much later than intended at 7:30 pm. I ran into an associate I knew reasonably well, who worked in a different group. He stepped onto the elevator with a box of his personal effects. Thinking he was quitting, I asked what was going on. He answered, "Through the end of November, I billed a little over 2000 hours. See you in January." For sure the guy was a bit of a jerk and somewhat misdirected. But, I get it.

I am having the hardest time in my life. Depression and anxiety have become unmanageable from the pressure to bill with only a ten vacation day policy. I don’t sleep anymore. I cry every single day. I have pushed through so much mentally to keep going, To keep logging in and billing but after two years the burnout is real. I have no more will do anything. I’m mentally burnt. My body physically aches from the lack of sleep and pure state of stress I’m constantly in. Any encouragement? Something?

Do any of you at EY ever have issues actually taking your vacation? Given we work with people across regions on multiple projects at once, who do you ask for approval for longer vacations? I feel like I usually just add it in ARMS and tell people I won’t be there X days. Rarely do I ever get pushback (but rarely do I ever take all my vacation days)
