Has anyone been able to get a leftover COVID vaccine by hanging around a Walgreens / Duane Reade during closing time?

Bro this isn’t leftover dinner from a restaurant

Yeah the Israel example will bear out whether this (among other elements of their aggressive vaccination strategy) is a good idea. Times this week reported that there’s no doubt that everyone who’s gotten a first dose will be be able to get a second.

Prior to the beginning of next week only group 1a could be vaccinated (next week group 1b can start). De Blasio was saying that extra vaccine had actually been thrown away when they can’t get enough 1a people there in time 🤦🏽‍♀️

My SO is a healthcare provider who doesn’t work in a hospital so became eligible last Monday. The earliest appointment he could get was tomorrow, and he has to go to a site 30 min. from where we live. He would have been happy to show up anywhere that had extra doses during the week. This is unbelievably poor planning. Many healthcare workers who want the vaccine still haven’t gotten it. Why didn’t they have a standby list of waiting healthcare workers who would come in if called?

I found a loophole, I volunteered for the vaccine trials...

like

Feb 1 officially unblinded and placebos get scheduled for the shot but you can get an OTC antibody test now and that plus the significant reaction after the 2nd shot means it’s just a formality for me.

Genuine question - why would there be leftovers? Don’t they just put them back in the fridge for the next day?

like

Because workers have to thaw the vaccine and leftovers are a result of no-shows or eligible people who turn down the vaccine. Can’t be refrozen

The problem I see with this is, if you are able to use this loophole and get one of the leftover vaccines one day, then the state/county needs to make sure you are on the appointment list so you get the 2nd dose in the correct timeframe. Now you’ve taken an appointment slot from someone who is higher risk and needs the vaccine more. I can see why places are hesitant to encourage this

like

Pwc3 in my area there hasn’t been a day when there are enough doses even for the scheduled appts. This “trick” of waiting for extras at day end would just cause chaos, both in the booking system and when there aren’t any leftover doses and the folks waiting get angry

What is the plan to get the people who get ‘leftovers’ a second dose though?

like

I have a friend not in NYC that got the vaccine this way. It’s still legit. Already scheduled for the second dose.

Is this something people have been able to do?

That paywall hurt. Where are people able to do this?

I’ve read articles about this happening but not sure the frequency with which it does

Aren’t most Duane Reade’s 24/7?

The pharmacy has hours

That is possible in other states. It is a rare opportunity, but sure does happen because pharmacy staff does the right thing and says "better to go into a lower priority person than thrown out." In New York Cuomo has made this explicitly illegal. It is the worst policy you can imagine, but there it is. They gace big fines, loss of vaccines etc. They're beating them into submission to make it as hard as possible to give it to a random person lest it get thrown down the sink. When they are running a surplus at the end of the day (and yes this does absolutely happen) they have to make a mad dash to find a firefighter or paramedic or an elderly person in a managed care facility. Sometimes they don't find them. In other states, if all else, a pharmacy could give it to the front end staff, again, lest it go down the drain. Or they could just look for whomever the oldest person in the store was. Have you considered trying this in Connecticut or New Jersey? At least there this is not explicitly illegal and they aren't doing iron fisted crackdowns

I am so grateful to have a job right now but I am really struggling. I’ve been at D for a little under a year and have been really unhappy with my experience. I find that single male friends of friends are generally very eager when we first met or were introduced (through events, common friends’ parties). I got invited to their hangout bunch / house parties (pre-covid), but the moment we established i have no romantic interest and only friendships, they disappeared and we become barely acquaintance. I genuinely want to keep them in my life as friends. Why is this the case?

Do people realize that it is risky for an employer to have you on payroll if you aren’t vaccinated? If you get sick, they have to grant you leave and all that. So beyond the other staff, it’s risky to have someone employed and risk they end up with Covid because they will be short on labor. So it’s not unreasonable for an employer to require a vaccine to protect headcount.

Long post alert. Also, confusing post alert haha. So, I'm going to be divorced in the next few months and have 2 kids who'll be with me. Ever since this situation has been finalized, I'm becoming very conscious of our spend & have been tight about it. Covid has helped. But I noticed that even my grocery store bills are pretty high...like a single run to Meijer is $125+. Costco is like $200 or so. We've always had fresh fruits, nuts liberally used in our house.
