Not true. Plenty of people make partner by lateraling with 0 connections and one can self aquire business/build their own book. You just can't rely on inheriting enough business to make partner. Being a crazy workhorse to get partnership is also possible. Not that anyone is likely to get to partner anyway.

I think it depends on the firm for sure! My group has had two loved senior associates move during the pandemic for family reasons to areas without offices, and we have several partners who only go in 2-3 times a month. I am fully remote until I move to a city with an office (probably in 2023) and I am not concerned because my team isn’t very in-office to begin with.
