This post just made me really proud of how far we’ve come as a country. 20 years ago people were smoking in McDonald’s and now young people really don’t get a lot of exposure to smokers at all. I’m not a doctor so can’t answer you’re question. But as someone who lived in that era with smokers, and lived in houses with smokers, you probably need to get an idea of what kind of smoker you’re dealing with. Are they blowing it out the window, smoking outside, or are a light weekend smoker? Or are we talking a 2 pack a day inside smoker with tar stains dripping down the walls? If it’s an older apartment (possible converted duplex, etc) with older infrastructure it’s very possible you’ll be able to smell it through some cracks, especially if you live above them. Just speaking from some personal experience.

I don't think that would be considered second hand smoke. Maybe third hand and health would prob be the same. That smell though is going to stink up everything you own. I shared an apartment with smokers and they smoked in there bedrooms which I was in between. They didn't smoke in the common areas. I didn't notice when I lived there but when I moved out in a non smoking building I smelt my blankets and bed coverings and had to throw them out. That smell was so subtle throughout the apartment I got used to it.

Health wise you are fine, the smell would be my concern.

I had this issue and my entire building was supposed to be non-smoking. Look up your local laws on second hand smoke and ask the landlord how they handle drifting smoke between units. It is normally incumbent on the landlord to prevent smoke from one unit entering another In my case the entire building was supposed to be smoke-free. I reported the smoker multiple times and the Super came and verified they were smoking multiple times. However, the building never evicted them or took any action other than issuing warnings. So I moved out of the unit in the middle of my lease after a few months of this. My landlord later sent me a demand letter for the unpaid rent covering the remainder of the lease and would not return my security deposit. I told them I would sue them for constructive eviction if they didn’t drop the demand for rent. They ended up dropping their demands and gave me back the full security deposit after the threat to sue.

Can you just ask your doctor since they would know your health concerns and history. If it’s that big of a deal, then maybe look into non smoking buildings.

I had a smoker directly under me and the smell would come up through the air shafts. When I complained about it to the management, they just said “too bad there’s nothing we can do because smoking is allowed in the building” and I would have to wake up every day with a scratch and drip in the back of my throat that was just like back when I used to be a smoker

That’s nasty! Hope you can move soon

Based on some preliminary research, the American Lung Association stated that cig smoke can travel through walls etc but doesn’t specify the extent that level of secondhand smoke is dangerous, and Wirecutter discusses how HEPA and activated carbon air filters can reduce the level of pollution in the air from secondhand smoke, but don’t have a good sense of what level of pollution and how dangerous it would be from the shared wall + running a Dyson (HEPA + activated carbon) air filter

Ur fine

According to the American lung association there are potential health concerns from secondhand smoke in the same building even if it’s not like the same house, thats why I’m concerned. I also have asthma and am very sensitive to cig smoke :/

I was asking if anyone had heard from any doctors / medical professionals in a similar situation haha not medical advice from accountants

If this bothers you, why don’t you ask to move apartments?

I would absolutely not move in next to a smoker if I were you. If you are this concerned about it, it will bother you. Plus, you will be able to smell it and it’s gross.

Thanks all for your input! Was strongly leaning towards it being a deal breaker to get this unit and have decided that it’s best to forgo it - always affirming to hear other’s experiences
