Has anyone been successful at getting back sign on bonuses after a layoff? My C suite is pushing me to contact continuously more than 10 former employees who were laid off months ago for bonuses over $15k each. I feel so unethical/uneasy doing this, they have me lawyer rate shopping and are willing to sue the get the money back. I told them chances are slim of getting the money back. This is the tip of the iceberg. There’s more. Trying to get out of here asap, otherwise I’m going on STD.

That's interesting. The company I work for provides sign on bonuses and it clearly states in offer letter that it must be paid back for xyz reasons EXCEPT for reduction in force.

Those people didn't choose to leave. Feels strange to ask for that back unless the company is strapped for cash? I'd be getting out as fast as I could!

Yeah it was strange too. All their “employment agreements” are odd. Everything about this company is odd and my anxiety is through the roof.

No repayment agreement, laid off. Not termed for cause. Laid off due to lack of work. And I’ve stayed the ramifications and all I get is “they owe it back why are you being so complicated?”

Oof, that’s so awful. Is there any way to convince them the negative publicity and blowback could be far more costly to their business than the amount they could ever potentially recover from their former employees? Unless there’s some provision in the offer letter/employment agreement to recover the monies, I doubt they could claw back anything.

Yikes doesn’t even begin to describe what I’ve inherited. Not even 2 months in and my psych team already is noticing huge uptick in anxiety and panic. A dormant disorder is flaring up resulting in pain due to the 12 hour days 7 days a week. I’m already burned out and looking for a way out.

Let’s make it worse….just got an IM “be sure to email the most recent layoff and let them know we will deduct from final paycheck for bonus if they don’t pay it back. We might extend their visa by term date if they comply, if not oh well.” I just can’t. State law says we can’t deduct all of it (leaders think they can) only to minimum wage on final check if the employee signed agreement to it. Sadly they did. I’m ethically bankrupt.

Probably not. If they do, it’s gonna be a hefty price. It’s horrific to be going back and forth of “they signed it they owe it. Why is this so complicated?” Like dude. Do you not understand???? You take their FINAL check in a west coast state? Yeah all hell breaks loose. I literally stated what would happen. All for $6k of $50k. Like is that worth it?

Did you not see any red flags during your interview with them? I accepted a nightmare role years back but they lied to me during the interview. Flat out lied about so much.

Applying to new jobs like mad today. Woke up yesterday to a text at 1am from CEO saying our CTO is to approve PTO moving forward. Not me, not leads. I have a lead yelling at me trying to teach her management skills and how to track performance. Yesterday while doing basic chores my lower back seized up and I’ve been in extreme pain since then. 7 weeks is all it took to run me into the ground. I’m baffled, defeated, disappointed, frustrated and just done. After tax and benefits I’m the lowest paid person in the company. Running so far and gonna activate that short term disability if I can (we gotta make it to first payroll with new PEO first which if we don’t I’ll lose my mind)

You need to go out on STD *now*. If your medical team is seeing this many issues, the time is now. You can job hunt while on leave but you have to secure the most important thing: you.

Let's cool it with the layoff threads team. Consulting is up or out and the business model depends on 15-20% churn to work. Unless you're seeing 1 in 5 people quitting expect some firings every year

I worked as a technical PM for a medium-sized adtech company in NYC in charge of 2 technical teams, and the business intelligence team.

On Thursday I was informed by the lead PO and HR that leadership had decided that the project management office was no longer necessary for the company and all three of us, the director and the two technical PMs, were being let go. None of us were given any notice.

They offered me 2 weeks of severance pay and I negotiated it to 3.

Hi Everyone! Between corona and snowstorms, “real life” is seeming as far off as anything else. Curious to hear what some people are doing to keep their employees engaged? I recently joined a start-up company where am conflicted if I should stay or leave as I see my values & ethics being affected. Everything is being excused by everyone saying this is because it is a start-up and we need to be agile & flexible in how we do things. At the end what I see is non-transparency & bias. When it suits us we do things without processes because all processes are considered corporate and any process that does not give us what we want right now then it's not a good process.
