Ya, why I hesitate to consider any of this!
Nearly finished with my deck. I highly suggest building a detached floating deck and checking your state's building codes. Also, it is better to be safe than sorry--consider pulling permits in the event you sell later and questions come up. I received quotes for 3 - 4.5x material cost and did it myself for the 1x rate.

I helped my parents build a roughly 15' x 15' raised patio about a decade ago. My dad and I did the whole thing ourselves and if memory serves, we did it for <$2k in Ohio.
With inflated lumber prices now, that would likely be closer to $5k if not more.
