Has anyone butchered a case interview, recovered from it, and have gotten the job? If so, how did you recover from it? Any advice for those who are scared shitless of case interviews?

I totally screwed up my first case study for the job I now have. I only read Case In Point and was trying to wedge the case into one of the four or five frameworks I knew. It basically started getting really awkward, so I basically said to myself, “welp, f*ck, guess i’m not getting this job.” I abandoned all the framework BS and just focused on establishing a connection with the interviewer, and I started asking questions since I was genuinely a little curious about the case. Ultimately managed to walk through the whole case and was able to finish strong with some good insights on my own. Afterwards she apparently told people that I did the best out of everyone who interviewed that day. 🙃

Best way to practice is live with another person. In final rounds you can get away with doing mediocre on one, but will need to knock the other two out of the park

@bcg2 What role did you apply for and were your case interviews centralized on what you were going to do?

My school's Consulting Club keeps telling me to wait for them to teach us and to not start before we get on campus. 😖 One student at McK told me to use the interviewer as a partner and to come up with the response as a team.

@M1 Congrats! I am hoping for more of these stories where things looked sour, but were able to recover, and get the job!

I thought case in point was ok for an introduction to case interviewing but pretty bad for anything beyond an initial practice dip. It’s a little too canned and doesn’t give flexibility to how a case would actually evolve. Victor Cheng LOMS and David Ohrvall’s Crack the Case were in contrast significantly better in giving guidance.

Case in point is business focused or rather centered. What about cases involving the public sector? Any advice on reads, practice?

I like OP’s question — were your case interviews centralized on what you were doing to do? What role did you apply to?

A company recently interviewed me. However the reviews goven by them to the receuiter are positive but they are mentioning that finalizing will take time as they are to decide between 2 candidates(me and someone else). Currently freaking out. I just got an offer from a startup that I plan on accepting but in the offer letter it includes that it’s contingent on passing a drug test. I took edibles three times over the past seven days (not daily) after going on a one+ month cleanse before this because the other company I was interviewing with I knew drug tested, and since I didn’t get it and was frustrated that’s how I chose to cope. What do I do? Do I delay signing the offer as long as I can?
