Has anyone considered or is anyone a practicing SMBC (single mother by choice), while still being a full time consultant? Thinking about going down that road to have my own child.

I started consulting as a single parent - it’s very very hard. You might make it work once you’re fairly high up (principal, partner) and have more control over your calendar or if you can do a part-time approach. But full-time work as a single parent is extremely difficult without a LOT of support (multiple nannies, family very close by, flexibility to take unpredictable time off, etc.). The only people I know who make it work are working 60% -80% time.

like

Thanks a lot! The family support is truly the key.

A Director I work with had the most adorable twins girls on her own! She travels for work and is employed on a full time basis. She also has a full time nanny living at home, so it can definitely be done!

like

Yes, believe the nanny has her own room.

If you’re going to do this then I would suggest an Au Pair or live in nanny. Since they live in your home the cost is significantly less, assuming you would have the space. I had friends who did this in college / grad school to save on the cost of living expenses while going to school. As long as boundaries and expectations are set beforehand it should be a great experience. My friends always had 2 days off per week but wasn’t always the traditional weekend, certain holidays always off, was paid additional if asked to work on a traditional day off, x amount of time off, paid extra to come on the family vacation or had free rain off the house when family was on vacation, etc.

like

I had many au pairs and the legal hourly limit was 45 hours. So it covers someone who has a normal schedule very well. When they worked more, I paid extra, but many cheap families of my au pairs’ friends did not. I don’t think an au pair would work if you were gone frequently for extended overnight trips as that counts as working when they are the sole person in charge. Au Pairs worked great for me but they were all in their late teens early 20s and I wouldn’t have felt comfortable leaving them with my kids for days on end by herself! And regardless of whether you have an au pair or nanny, they need their own space so they can get away from the family when they are off-duty

Where do you all like to shop for baby girl clothes? Stuck in a Carters/Old Navy/Target rut and need more options that are stylish and not too pricey! Daughter is 9 months old and wearing 12 month clothes right now. (Side note - are all 12 month+ pajamas made for skinny babes??? Now that we are upping sizes they all seem to be slimmer fitting! My baby needs somewhere to fit those arm/thigh rolls!)

Should I have a second child? I met my husband later in life at 37 yo. We had our first when I was 39. I thought I was good with just one as I was never someone who really wanted kids but I know my husband would love to have another and now that I have one I think about her having a sibling. I’ll be 41 in March so we need to start now. I love the ease and flexibility of one child and she’s been such good baby. I’m worried that if we have another I’ll regret it. I’m also about to start a new job.

Weddings! Those planning or just got done planning. How soon did you cry and say F it? It’s getting expensive. I don’t want to spend the money for just 1 day. I’m super happy going to the court house. But being my parents only child, I feel like I owe them a wedding. I’m tired of everyone having an opinion- location, date wise, how fast we’re doing it. I don’t know much longer I can take with all of this. I just want to be with my person, could careless about anything else.

Need advice: I have a young child who’s father has been mostly absent. Sadly, he passed last month and just found out he did have a life insurance policy with my child as the beneficiary. I was told that I can also claim his SS benefits for her as his only beneficiary until age 19. The question is what do I do with this money?? Can it be put into a UTMA account? I quite literally know nothing about these types of payouts and the rules associated with them.

Looking for advice on how/when to tell my bosses I’m pregnant. I’m only 8 weeks and have my first doctor’s appointment this week to confirm the pregnancy. We haven’t told any family or friends yet. We have been back in the office since June, so I’m not working remotely. I plan to wait until 12/13 weeks to tell anyone at work. I’m 29 and a 4th year associate. I do work for 4 main partners, though I have closer working relationships with some more than others. Any advice appreciated!

Let’s specify if we are mid market, enterprise etc. so we can see how the comp compares. Are the goals they set for commission and bonus realistic?
