Has anyone done an overseas shoot during covid? I may have one coming up and my partner is very nervous and doesn’t want to do it. Curious how everyone feels about this and if it’s possible to do it safely.

We just did one. Nice and comfy from our beds and couches, over zoom, at 3AM. Gonna be a while before I think about hopping on a plane.

They’re sending you overseas in this??

Do it remotely, like everyone else. It’s crazy to travel to shoots right now. It’s only advertising! It’s hard to do remotes, but every production company has figured it out. They have the technology for you to see what the camera sees, and to communicate with the crew. You do the tech scout, casting, wardrobe etc on Zoom or other platform. It’s slower than being there but it works. I’ve done five remote shoots, from a simple white background with two actors, to major shoots with several locations and dozens of actors. They all worked out fine. It’s irresponsible of your agency to have you travel.

Anywhere is literally safer than the US right now.

smart

At the population level, sure. But for an individual who has been working from home and taking all the proper precautions, spending a bunch of time in an airport and then on a plane is extremely risky.

Can you even go in person if you wanted to? Are you in the USA? I don’t think many countries are even letting us in.

This is true. I have a dual citizenship and just returned home after a trip to The States and got grilled hard at immigration. Basically had to prove that my primary residency was outside of America and that I was returning “home”. Even then, had to quarantine for 14 days.

Yeah I’m in the US. I think it would be in one of the countries that does allow entry. My agency has done a few similar shoots this year successfully but I’m still a bit nervous. For those of you who’ve done a shoot through Zoom instead...how does that even work? Does the director like, carry you around the set showing you stuff? Or...?

Think of it like a bunch of off-site pre-pro meetings. Except it's all off-site now. Wardrobe, casting, location scouting, the shoot, everythjng. It forces you to trust the people you're working with across the pond a bit more, but you should be able to trust the people you've hired/teamed up with to do the job you brought them on for. During the actual shoot, you should have a live feed of whatever the camera(s) sees. And depending on complexity, you'll have a dedicated PA to act as point person and keep you in the loop. You lose some of the one-to-one you'd normally get with the director between takes, but you don't lose it entirely. Really, as long as you've hired a competent director/production company, you'll have plenty to work with in edit. Which is a whole other bag of different-but-doable that you'll get used to fairly quickly. Oh, and craft services is now kraft mac n cheese, but whatever. At least you won't have to worry about expense reports.

I joined consulting before covid and really enjoyed the lifestyle (travel, events, socializing, afterworks). I’m young and it was a lot of fun. Now this lifestyle has been gone for two years and the only lifestyle is teams calls. I feel..bored? But bored is not the word. What do y’all do outside of work, during the week? My weekends are fun but my week is just work and teams calls… I’m 22 and I don’t wanna stay at home all day!!!! I wanna see the world

I’ve been promised a promotion. The discussion started many months ago before Covid. When the pandemic hit, I stepped up & worked insanely hard, above my level—it’s been praised and recognized, but not rewarded. I was told the promotion will be delayed for reasons not to do with me. Am I going to get strung along? Should I start looking? Can I ask for more money when it does come? I believe I deserve a lot more money, but I’m afraid of sounding greedy or entitled, especially during a pandemic.

Hey everyone! Recent transplant (26 F) who moved here during Covid (family reasons) so still not quite familiar with the areas. I’m currently living in Brentwood but looking to move. I’m considering Marina Del Rey as I want to be a bit closer to the office (in Venice) and the airport for when things open back up/travel resumes. I tried searching here but didn’t see a lot - what is the reputation of Mar Vista (and if possible - how is that different than Brentwood?). All opinions welcome! 🙂
