Has anyone done the Kentucky Bourbon Trail tour? Any recommendations on the best way to plan it? Where to stay, transportation, which distilleries are the best, etc.

Done it a few times. It depends a bit on what you want but my highlights are: Woodford for overall experience (gorgeous scenery, cool tour, good bourbon), Makers for something to bring home (stick your fingers in the mash, dip your own bottle), and Four Roses for the tasting (intimate tasting, delicious), Buffalo Trace for the stories (so many great brands come from there…and it was free!). You really can’t go wrong though. I drove myself once which was OK and used luxury bus service the second time which was great. Just can’t find the name. Have fun!!

Woodford is hands down my favorite. I couldn’t get access to Bulleit when I went but we ended up doing these smaller distilleries closer to Louisville since that was our staying point and they were just as fun even though they weren’t as famous.

I did it for my Bachelor Party 2 years ago. I recommend staying in Louisville and getting a private tour guide if you're going with a group. From Louisville it's easy to access Stitzel-Weller, Buffalo Trace, Maker's Mark, Jefferson's, Rabbit Hole, Michter's, Old Forester, and a few others. I highly recommend Stitzel-Weller (do the bourbon/food tasting) and Jefferson's. Buffalo Trace was also an incredible experience just for the rickhouse tour alone, paired with the age of the facility and the smell in the air... But it underwhelmed on the tasting and oddly, their selection of bourbon to purchase there was non-existent. If you stay in Louisville you have to go to The American Whiskey Bar (historic with INCREDIBLE cocktails and bourbon selections), Louisville Slugger Museum, Jeff Ruby's steakhouse, and The Eagle which has the best Kentucky Fried chicken I have ever had in my life.

It was really cool. Very intimate. They experiment a lot. They both distil their own whiskey and source their own whiskey but what I found the coolest for sure was seeing all of the wild, innovative and crazy things they experiment with. I recommend it for sure.

The Beam tour is great and would definitely recommend. Heaven Hill just revamped their visitors center and it seems a lot better than their previous tour, so would recommend that as well. I’ve also done the Four Roses tasting at their like little outpost place and that’s probably only worth it if you just want to try the bourbon

Nothing to add here but going on a bachelor party trip in there august!

If you are trying to add items to your collection, follow some of the fan pages on Facebook. You can score good stuff at Buffalo Trace and Heaven Hill depending on the day and usually the FB group posts around 10AM with what the offering is.

Following. Wanted to do it for my 30th but too much uncertainty to plan. Maybe I'll turn 30 again next yr with this info 🥳

Going in late October with a group of buddies. Pick a home base (either Lexington or Louisville) and pick 2-3 to head to. I wouldn’t do more than 3 in a day unless you want to be running from place to place. I’ve done it once before, woodford, BT, and Makers I all recommend. Also, if you start in Lexington in October, Keeneland is also an excellent to do list item on a different day than the distilleries to watch the ponies and enjoy a cigar/adult beverages 🐎.

Btw, our plan is to do Wild Turkey, Woodford, and then Buffalo Trace this time. They are all under 40 min from Lexington and not terribly far between. A lot of snobs raise their nose at the Turkey, but they have a Russell’s select tasting I’m very much excited about. And I’ve heard they always have their rare breeds and limiteds available to buy in the shop. Also, aside from Keeneland, Lexington has the Distillery District with a bunch of eateries, a brewery, and a local infant distillery right downtown. IMO, Lexington doesn’t offer as much access to as many distilleries, but the local eats and college feel is way more welcoming than the Lou. Something to keep in mind.

I hit a bunch of gift shops when I passed through during Memorial Day, hit EW in downtown Louisville. They have EW12, the Elijah Craig grenades, I think EW23 drops there. Peerless has a lot of cool stuff too, expensive. I would have bought some bottles if I knew their products better Eat at Willett. They have the best food, it would compete with the food scene in Chicago. And it was cheap (for the door). WFR pours are 50/2oz but many tasty bottlws

I've done the stops in Lexington (not much a trail if you just hand out around one campsite) but it was nice

Makers had my favorite tasting room

Going to spend 2 days in Bardstown in August. Have tours booked at 1792, Heaven Hill, BBC, and Willett and also go to the Bourbon History museum in town.
