I called Chase yesterday afternoon at 2pm (flight was supposed to depart at 6pm ET but was cancelled due to COVID-19) and chase worked with United to get me my points fully refunded. (Note, i don’t have a very high status with United)
Best is to call them within the 7days before departure and tell them you want the points back and not airline credit.
Two key questions here:
1. Did you purchase a refundable or nonrefundable fare?
2. Did you cancel the ticket, or did the airline cancel your flight?
I will assume you purchased a nonrefundable fare since that’s what most people do. Obviously, refundable tickets can be canceled and a cash refund given at any time.
If you cancel a nonrefundable ticket, you are only due a credit for future travel, not a cash refund (which then enables a points refund by Chase). Normally, you would also be subject to a $200 change fee but that is being waived for covid related cancelations.
If the airline canceled the flight, you are entitled to a cash refund, even on a nonrefundable ticket, and should keep pushing until you get it.
Understand it sucks from a customer perspective but nonrefundable fares have never been refundable in cash and the airlines certainly can’t afford to do it now.
For example let’s look at United.
UA has ~$8B in liquidity ($6B cash, $2B credit facility)
Revenues are ~$3B per month, estimated down 80% for April and May ($2.4B each month)
Given a cost base which also hovers near $3B per month and will be at least $1B per month during the pandemic, UA would not make it past July if they adopted a ‘cash refunds for everyone’ policy.
Yep, called in and they wouldn’t do points
I had a cancelled flight on AA last Saturday. I called Chase the day before the flight was supposed to be, and they refunded the points in full. It was my second call to them, though, and the first rep was extremely unhelpful and kept telling me I would have to pay a cancellation fee.
I cancelled 3 days ago and still havent got the credit email yet, anyone else get it?
*within 12 months from when the ticket was booked
If the actually flight was cancelled then you should be eligible for a refund but you have to fight it out with the airline
Have you all gotten a follow up email with the details? I still have not and got the original email over a month ago. Thinking of just calling United now.
Had same problem. Chase couldn’t help but as long as you fall under the DOT rules for refunds, just contact the airline directly. I twitter DMed United and made it clear I wanted a full refund and the rep filled out the request for me (after I corrected them when they tried to say it was chase who cancelled the flight when it was actually United who did). I don’t expect the points back for at least a month though.
I just talked to them through online chat. They said it was American's policy to issue a travel voucher instead of a refund, but I can contact American to try to get a refund instead of a travel credit
Seconding some of the experiences here. The chat isn’t a productive use of time, they are just going to tow the same line. I called, got one rep and then asked to speak to a supervisor.
You are in your rights to get points / cash back from the airline. The department of transportation makes this pretty clear for flights in an out of the US. I cited this and Visa rules requiring refund for non-delivery in the original currency.
Hold firm and ask them to reach out to the airline.
I called United (1K) and they said they’d put through a ticket for the refund to be given in cash. Sounds like it’ll take a while though.
United call was great though I was put in touch with someone immediately.
