Has anyone else's firms essentially dropped their DEI programming? After last summer, we had a lot of virtual meetings with speakers and awareness weeks for various affinity groups. The diversity committee also had meetings planned. The awareness weeks scheduled for 2021 summer, fall, and winter never happened, and the diversity committee meetings keep getting canceled and never rescheduled.

The problem is unless your firm has dedicated staff in a DEI role, this falls to diverse attorneys, who already have a full time job + Covid stress + life stress + diversity burnout + general burnout. What’s your year level? Perhaps the firm would support you if you wanted to organize some events? If nothing else, my firm seems happy to throw budget at us for any kind of event we want to plan (could be as casual as an affinity group meeting over zoom that comes with a $20 doordash allowance etc).

Oh that's a good point. Our professional development lead basically doubles as the programming coordinator and the diversity committee is run by attorneys at various levels. I'm a mid-level associate and would be down to plan informals, but because he committee is already run by attorneys, I don't think they would okay it. I once sent them an article that would be good to circulate and they didn't do it. I think they have a tight grip on what the committee and firm will sponsor.

Yes my firm acted similarly but still has the nerve to say it's committed to diversity and inclusion. 🙄 I have no idea what happened to the affinity groups.

My takeaway is that the firm tried, but at the end of the day they're still a firm and it's business as usual now. If I want any support and comeraderie as a minority, I'll have to find it elsewhere. Anyone else experience this?

I am an Indian and grew up in india. I have been in usa for 15+ years and married to a fantastic man. I hear moms talking about sending kids to school with diversity and get world view. To us our family is diverse , I had zero exposure to outside Indian culture until I was 15. What is the benefit of diversity to growing kids ? If anyone is a first gen immigrant what you wish your parents didn’t do? My parents raised me in dictatorship style and I don’t want to do that to my daughter but contd..

Hi, we just launched Diversity and inclusion committee at our work place and one of our many initiatives is to share some reminders /notifications about safety and inclusion in common employee platforms/portals e.g There’s no place or time when discrimination is acceptable. Please feel free to report to HR if you com across any discriminatory behavior. Anyone has any more similar ideas what other topics we can add?

After reading many annual reports, I am really getting tired of the fact that female management board members are always HR. Often that’s the only female member. Gender equality has long way to go

Since this topic comes up once a week on here: Is having a racial preference in dating racist? (1) it is, (2) it may not be your fault, you could have been conditioned by society to view one race as attractive, (3) no it’s not the same as gender preference, (4) yes this damages our community, basic emotional intelligence would let you realize this, and (5) pick up your phone and Google instead of asking here over and over. There is a wealth of research and history behind this topic.

So I typically don’t answer the EEO questions at the end of applications that ask for race and gender. Lately I’ve noticed companies following up via email for this information after I submit the application. Am I the only one who does this? Does it even matter? Any thoughts on the follow up emails asking for the information after the application has already been submitted?

I went to an Ivy for undergrad but also got into all the UCs. My main reason for choosing Ivy was for relatively more diversity since they use affirmative action compared to UCs at the time which was not (and therefore had many many more Asians). As I reflect on my four years there I still see the value in Affirmative Action because by being so much closer with people who were different than me, I learned so much more about the world.

What are your thoughts on splitting everything 50/50? I've only dated men who take pride in being protector and providers but now running into men who want everything split 50/50. It is a turn off for me. Am I being unreasonable or have I just been spoiled previously and having a tough time adjusting to reality?
