Nope. Even when I didn’t get the money I asked for and the firm thought I was a greedy ungrateful ass it was still worthwhile because they gave me the info I needed to lateral with no regrets.
I have asked several times and once my boss got really upset about it. I thought that I made the wrong choice but shortly after that I got a very substantial raise so… do not regret it.
Curious to know how you went about with that request! Tips welcome 🤗
The first few times were difficult but it has gotten much easier each time. The first time I asked I did research and had printouts from a few online resources like salary.com. He ended up engaging a local HR company (that I researched and sent to him) to do an assessment of the legal department pay in comparison to the area and found that we were substantially underpaid. It still wasn't close to the number I had given him and I continued to tell him that I think I deserve more. At this point he knows I'm just going to mention it peridically we're going to have a discussion about it at least once a year. I also read Secrets of 6 Figure Women every year before my annual review. Even if you're not a woman, this book is so incredibly helpful for evaluating your worth and asking for what you deserve. I highly recommend it! If that doesn't appeal to you, there are a lot of other salary negotiation books out there as well.
If you haven't had a conversation like this before, it is going to be uncomfortable. But you are worth it and you will feel so much better after asking for what you deserve!
Even if they don't give you as much as you ask for (and you should always add at least 20 or 30% on top of what you think you should ask for) you'll know exactly how much they value you or don't value you as the case may be and you'll have the information that you need to decide how to move forward.
Let me know if you have other questions I can help with. Best of luck in this and please let me know how it turns out!
