Yes I have experienced this and this is how I approach it. A. Not show an emotive response and always thank them for sharing their feedback or POV, especially when it’s negative B. Have proof points quantitative and qualitative so your directors and this person know you did your HW to generate this concept C. If she continues to go out of her way to poke holes in your ideas, put her on the spot in front of everyone. Ask her to share an alternative idea with proof points. My guess is she won’t have one and won’t want to produce one as it’s more work for her so it will shut her up real quick.
But is her input valid? If it isn’t, you could use the opportunity to showcase the thought process that went behind the design decisions you took or you could ignore her.
And if she actually makes good points, it could be worth seeing if she’s willing to channel some of that energy into mentoring.
Everyone messes up or gets ripped into once in a while, but as long as you can stay cool and address criticism calmly, you’ll come off looking more professional.
I've been the target of some hatred. It does seem like it was related to jealousy because I was allowed a flexible work schedule. However, I'll never really know and I'm ok with that. These folks weren't in my direct department but we did work cross-functionally.
What I did was check in with the designers that worked on my team to see if I was unreasonable or not living up to my role. Those folks are still good friends of mine, so I know they were telling me the truth. They told me they could see a change in me but that I was still great to work with. In the end, I did leave the position because it was unhealthy for me. Luckily, I got to work with some of my team at the next couple of places I worked at.
I think LDC1 has some very good points. It's important when this happens to take a step back and do some evaluation. Don't be afraid of criticism and honestly, don't be afraid to stand up for your work. Do choose your battles wisely, though.
When I critique someone’s work, it’s because I don’t think the work is good. Not because I’m jealous of said person.
