This is absolutely an issue from time to time. It is an uncomfortable but necessary conversation. It can cover anything from style of dress to grooming. I've had two instances where someone's body odor was so offensive that clients and coworkers complained. These can be very sensitive, but important, conversations. In every case of my experience, the person didn't realize how they looked, presented themselves or smelled and they were both embarrassed and grateful.....and in most cases they made successful changes.
I’ve had to talk to staff about it. Quite awkward, but if they’re dressing sloppy (wrinkled shirts, stained shirts, damaged shoes, short sleeves in a more conservative client, etc) then it’s better to have that discussion before the client says something.
Yes! I was told I had to tame my curly hair, because it wasn’t professional. Had to tame my southern accent because it didn’t sound professional. I outlasted both of those folks with that misguided advice by working hard and having great client relationships. They love my southern accent (and don’t comment on my hair). Been a partner a long time now and still know I was right to hold on to what made me different.
That said, I have had to have two conversations with folks for hygiene, where body odor was an issue. So uncomfortable but necessary given the client observed on it. And one really uncomfortable one on breath!!!
A senior manager once commented on my fade haircut saying “you should have more conservative hairstyle.” I ignored his comment and got promoted to a senior the same year he got fired from sexual harassment.
