Has anyone ever been fired? If so how, and what led up to it?

Yes. I was an intern and they fired me with 3 days left in the program for cause. I was looking at sensitive data I had access to but shouldn’t have been looking at because I had no business reason to do so. It left me pretty shaken up and I didn’t think I’d ever get a real job after that.

Also curious to know what you were curious about hah

First job I had out of HS was a sales job. After the first week they fired me for not selling enough... to be more specific, not selling anything. I'm too honest to make a living that way. 🤣

My dad was fired once because he literally fell asleep at his desk a few times, due to having to take a job with an hour commute. He told me since that he's grateful now, because it's one thing that led him to starting and running his own successful business today. I felt less bad later when I was also let go from a temp position for falling asleep due to an hour commute. Lesson here is: don't take jobs with hour-long commutes!

Falling asleep and burn out are two different things though. Lol and in this industry, falling asleep is a forgivable act, especially during busy season.

Some I’ve seen (other than run of the mill low performance): Plagiarism of another firm’s report. Sexual harassment combined with drug usage. Screaming match with the partner. One thing that didn’t result in firing was an associate taking a no notice 2 week vacation in January. No one had any clue about where he was until he returned.

I got fired. I left PwC and started at a smaller local firm. Two months in they let me go. I was struggling to figure out the new technology and everything, especially remote. The main reason I got let go was because I was chatting w HR and asked about her position. I basically said I wasn’t happy in accounting and was potentially interested in HR. We had two HR girls going to be on maternity leave within the next few months so I thought it was valid to ask. The HR girl immediately told the partner and I was fired the next day. I’ve been on unemployment since (about 4 months) and it’s been amazing. I gained the weight back that I loss due to stress, I’m able to actually do stuff I care about, I have a life again. I am going to be making a big life change and considering my options for jobs I’d be happy doing. I feel like I finally have control over my life for the first time. I feel a lot of shame from being fired but it was the best thing for me. I was planning on leaving and looking at new jobs very soon after the original conversation so this just let me take the time to get unemployment and think about my life.

I’m sorry this happened. This is why you never talk to HR, folks. But I hope you’re doing well friend.

I myself didn’t get fired. But I was privy to some over my career. We had a rotation candidate from our offshore center. He was charging 8 hours each day to the client even though he was barely working 5 hours. His apartment was just beside the office (since the firm had rented it for him) so he was going back to his apartment for lunch for 2 hours everyday. On top of that, after 2 weeks he couldn’t provide any proof of what he had done so far. He was fired and sent back to his home country the next morning (not sure how they even arranged the flight so quickly).

The US firm fired him. Not sure if his home country firm fired him as well when he returned. But I’m sure at a minimum he was disciplined upon his return if not fired. It’s a long story to put here but he did have some fault of his own. For one thing, charging 8 hours to one client for 2 weeks straight (so 80 hours) without doing anything should have raised some red flags in his mind.
