ACD is the last level before things really start to suck. But the first time you get your sea legs at managing people is always hard. Give it 6 months and then decide
If you want to be a maker, there’s no shame in staying senior level / AD’ing.
I like mentoring and I can do that at an ACD level. Very little change otherwise from being senior.
You don’t have the final call on anything. You have more meetings to go to, but also managing AND still being expected to create your own work too.
No shame in going back. It also depends where you work. Some ACDs get treated like senior teams and don’t manage, and some act as CDs.
In my office, they’re treated like CDs, which is for sure adding to the stress. It feels like there’s a stepping stone missing.
I hate managing people. Thats why ive been in this biz 30 yrs and am a freelance very senior writer. I just like doing the work — not guiding and teaching, not doing air traffic control, not managing conflicts between everyone else. Some people like that stuff but I like writing. So maybe you are like me. Or maybe in time you will come to like all the managemt stuff. Id give it time but dont beat yrself up if you hate it.
I’m a CD at a small agency and still make the work. It’s kinda nice. You do the work and decide what goes to clients with no layers. Maybe consider a smaller agency.
