It depends what their reasoning to this "internal deadline" was. I've worked with SMs that had other huge engagements planned and their deadlines were always justified... for them. Did you not have the right resources, staff, or client documentation? Was this very different from the PY timeline? Was this discussed in a team planning meeting? Are you the client contact or the SM? (Maybe there was client expectations/ info you weren't aware of.) Did you communicate your concern regarding the quick turn-around expectation? How is everyone else on the team feeling about this deadline? It is all about perspective. You may just be right and the SM is a selfish person with unrealistic expectations. Respectfully bring it up... and explain your concern regarding the quality of work, other projects being affected, lack of timely communication... and how this may affect the relationship with the client. Good luck OP
Maybe they don’t like you.
Hey OP, I’ve been through this and I know how frustrating it can be. SMs and PPEDs tend to be out of touch with our “production-line” timelines. They forget how long it can take to sort out tech difficulties and train new staff, or how long it takes us to first-time review and research apart from SALY. If you are a respected senior who meets their deadlines and provides clean work, you should be able to have and honest conversation with your SM. Tell him how the expedited deadline affected you, then listen to his side and make a plan for next time. That’s what effective teams do.
This was made clear to me by the partner. Also I am a senior who consistently meets deadlines, knows how to prioritize etc. I just feel as though this was unnecessary because it caused so much anxiety that wasn’t needed
I feel as though this is just him lacking respect for me. This SM is a constant issue at my firm. btw. I’m just not sure if this is worth mentioning to my counselor
So just throwing this out there, in the biz world that’s not uncommon. Obviously I don’t know the specifics but if you brought it to someone, a potential reaction could be: he’s your boss you do what he tells you.
PwC 1 gotcha. Thanks for the perspective. It’s just that i feel as though it’s unnecessary to do something like that to someone because it wasn’t a realistic deadline anyways.
It’s not realistic and it’s a dick move but I’ve never mentioned it to my counselor. You just have to know that some people are asshats to work with. If you have a running list of things they do and it gets to be too much to handle then by all means mention it on your list but I wouldn’t bring it up as an issue, I’d use it more like a drop in the pond
