It would also be helpful to provide insight on travel policy - first class in which flights, always 5-star hotels? Etc.

I used to work at a web design and branding agency with over 10 project managers and none of them knew what tf they were doing, how to submit good design requests, or how to manage clients. The number of times I got asked for truly insane requests was far too often, and always sooo infuriating. Even the creative and art directors didn't know modern digital requirements, and would just double down on these problems.
"make a banner ad!" - gives me 3 paragraphs of copy, a full sentence CTA, a list of graphical elements a mile long, and the budget of a peanut for the tiniest possible banner available. 🥜
"This client needs a logo! I told them you can have it done in 15 minutes!" - realizes after skimming the email thread they call a "project brief" that the client wants a freaking screenshot of their own logo that they didn't know how to ask their own designer for. 🙄
I have soooooo many of these stories omg, and the problems were almost always due to clueless project managers who were trying to impress clients, with sad burnt out designers bearing the brunt of their lousy management and big promises.
Thankfully I don't get these kinds of requests anymore as an in-house product designer, but I very much empathize with your frustration!! My burnout from that agency led me to look for only in-house roles. In-house has its own issues, but yeah.... I do NOT miss clueless project managers catering to every whim and request of every client!
All of them?
Yes. They’re too afraid to take ownership of the idea that we’re experts in the field and that at least warrants a conversation/reason beyond “because they said so”.
Not to mention justifying that expertise with better pay
Annnnnd this is why I shifted to product.
