Has anyone ever had to do a live “case study” with another attorney as part of the interview process for an in-house commercial counsel position? What can I expect? Any tips?

I had to redline a contract too. 30 min to read it and 30 min to discuss it.

Yes. It’s to see if you know how to be a corporate lawyer or if your resume is just fluff. I ask applicants to show me how they would redline a fake contract I provide them in 10 minutes. It’s like 5 pages — they really only need 5.

I know you’re being sarcastic, but my employees work 30 hour weeks, so trust me when I say my boss approval metrics are highest echelon. Everyone is competent. Everyone owns their work product. No micromanaging. Biweekly meetings capped at 30 minutes, unless something urgent comes up.

I’m sorry that it’s controversial to allege that many lawyers have inflated resumes.

Yep, then they made me a low offer. The case study was more of an intellectual exercise, to see if I could not only give a good answer, but to understand how I got there. It can also show off good instincts, even if you don’t quite know how you got to the answer. It was an interesting exercise at a minimum.

What are some strategies for building up thought leadership around your product/ service? The firm I work for (Bloc Digital) is expanding to the US and part of my role is to build up their brand. They already do some work in the US (Rolls Royce, Lubrizol, Nordson) and their products/ services center around industrial technology and marketing (immersive realities, IoT, 3D animation). Any thoughts?

Do they need more seniors than managers? Or they are both desperately needed? I am just saying that because the referral program pays the same for seniors and managers, and less for above.

I am seeking new employment, I was recently laid off due to lack of work. I would very much appreciate any leads. I have a Bs in Construction Management and over 15 years experience with Revit and AutoCAD and 7 years of plumbing design. I have solid references and impeccable work ethic. I truly enjoy what I do. Working remotely the last three years has become a way of my life and supports our current situation well, therefore I am seeking a similar role but will consider other opportunities.

Hi! I'm currently interviewing (3/6 interviews so far) for for an appeals manager role for DME. The job entails not only to bill for dme (cms 1500) but also to follow up on any denials or appeals, amongst other administrative duties. My questions are is it typical to have 1 person doing both the billing and denials within a new vertical for all ins.? How difficult is billing for dme as I only have experience in gyn onc and lactation billing? What's a fair salary? I have 8+ yoe in rcm, no certs.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

I'm an in-house counsel at a national company. Our GC is leaving. I’m the only other in-house attorney, and I’ve only been here for 4 months. I like the job. Previously, I was a 6th-year associate.
The CEO asked me to stay and implied a larger role, but doesn't have a clear picture of what that looks like. Asked for my help in redefining. Even unsure as to timing or whether we'll hire another GC. Questions for Fishbowl: (1) benefits or pitfalls? (2) questions or requests you'd have for CEO?

I also know I’m not indispensable to my company.

Well-traveled people: what seem like the best major market cities to live in with access to great in-house jobs (FAANG, adjacent companies, etc.). Some markets seem like really fun places to live but seem insanely expensive (San Fran, DC). Others seem like great comp to cost of living ratios but you seem like you’d basically be in a boring suburb (Raleigh, etc.) or have major drawbacks (arctic weather in Chicago, etc.). Maybe I’m totally off base though. Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts.
