What are some strategies for building up thought leadership around your product/ service? The firm I work for (Bloc Digital) is expanding to the US and part of my role is to build up their brand. They already do some work in the US (Rolls Royce, Lubrizol, Nordson) and their products/ services center around industrial technology and marketing (immersive realities, IoT, 3D animation). At a biglaw firm now, in the final round for a FAANG product counsel role. I just learned that one of the partners at the firm is involved in a big case adverse to the company I’m interviewing at. I have not worked on the case. Do companies run conflicts checks, do ethical walls, etc.? Could this be a problem if I get an offer?

How long can you take to accept an offer? I received a forma offer today and have one more interview with another company for another position that I’m considering. I expect that the other company will let me know if they plan to make an offer by the end of the week. I am seriously considering both and want to give each a chance. Is a week acceptable to accept an offer?

How likely is one to succeed at using a competing job offer to negotiate a raise at your own company? I’m happy at my current company aside from compensation, and don’t want to leave. But I wonder whether getting a better offer and trying to negotiate better pay in the current role is a losing proposition, because even if it is accepted, it may sour the current company on me, and put a target on my back in case people need to be let go. I also know I’m not indispensable to my company.

Well-traveled people: what seem like the best major market cities to live in with access to great in-house jobs (FAANG, adjacent companies, etc.). Some markets seem like really fun places to live but seem insanely expensive (San Fran, DC). Others seem like great comp to cost of living ratios but you seem like you’d basically be in a boring suburb (Raleigh, etc.) or have major drawbacks (arctic weather in Chicago, etc.). Maybe I’m totally off base though. Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts.

Does anyone have experience working in-house for Lyft? If so, can you share your experience?

Any insight into in-house gigs at studios/networks? Ie HBO, CBS, NBC etc? Pros and cons? Have applied for a few and have gotten some reciprocal interest but I don’t know any lawyers in this space. How is working for Amazon as a more generalist corporate counsel in terms of hours and culture? Is the culture toxic and cutthroat? Does Amazon seek to fire x% each year? In that vein, do managers seek to hire just to fire or are attorneys treated differently? Then Manager gets mad when I ask her to confirm whether I should pass on work to another Legal VP/VP’s team because I should have just sent it over without asking my Manager. Is it just me or is my Manager just being difficult?
