Yup -- went from creative director to strategy director-- I was so used to rewriting briefs (if not ignoring them completely and finding a better insight ) that it seemed a natural move. I still get to be creative, plus now I can also focus on more than just the execution, I can guide the entire foundation of the campaign.
If you want to make the switch, deconstruct the campaigns you've worked on and see if there were insights and emotional truths that you left out. Then write a brief that you would actually use -- and share it with your team and ask them to judge you -- honestly. Cause the key to any great strategy is getting creatives to actually use it - and consumers to not even realize they're being sold to.
I know of creative who did it and has been successful. I think being past creative would be a huge selling point on a resume. The advice I gave my former colleague at the time was to try to lean in to the strategy side of projects a bit more. Be more curious about attending research, have 1 on 1's with your strategist, and try to flex your strat muscle a bit more to start steering your career in that direction.
This is super helpful. Thank you. I'm going to set up a time to chat with my strategy director this week.
@Senior Copy- I wouldn't tell anyone at your agency about your ambitions though unless you see a direct opportunity to transition into a role. Department heads can get territorial- so I don't think your CD would be into that either. I would treat your discussion more like a strategy check in/pow wow with the goal of having your role and strategy to overlap a bit more.
I talked my way into a dual creative and strategy role but I had to leave an agency to do it. I had tried to move into strategy there and they were having none of it.
