Coworker did. She regretted it. Couldn’t find a job for a while and then started having a tough time explaining the gap on her resume (people assumed she was fired, counseled out, let go). Also the loss of income was huge. It feels great to leave when you hate your job so much, but after 1-2 months of being unemployed - it starts getting real painful.
As frustrating as your current job is, just stick it out until you find something else.
Good point though SC2 - the best time to find a new job is when you have one. It’s hard to explain “I just couldn’t take this crap anymore, so left”. That said - Seacrest OUT!
Twice
What do you really want to know?
Did it earlier this year since I was burnt out and needed personal time. I didn't have any difficulties finding a new job, however the interview process too awhile for a few firms
After 1-2 months? SC2 that's nothing. But a good reminder to not quit unless you are in a financial position to be without income for 6 months (to be safe)
Analyst 1, it’s very difficult to not do that.
I’ve changed jobs twice now, the first time around I had another one lined up before quitting. The second time I wasn’t so lucky.
It’s worth noting that I took the first job that came my way when I was looking the first time. Pretty impulsive decision to sign the first offer I got. Had harbored a lot of negativity towards my managers and SMs in the first role, constantly looking at myself as the victim and not thinking that there could be anything wrong in my mindset at all.
Turns out it was a bad decision because I got fired from that job and had to repeat the entire process again. The second time around I literally went insane because the interview process takes time but I was determined to hold out till I got the offer which was my top choice. Add to it the mental stress, throw in some meds withdrawal due to losing insurance, and the financial stress, you have a cocktail of a crazy person trying to find a new job.
TLDR: Keep calm and interviewing on till you find the right opportunity, don’t quit if you don’t have the financial means to make it through for a few months. Factor in additional time if you’re on a visa.
I’m about to
^damn - me too! What does that say about this crazy thing we do ?
I've done it twice. Never had to explain why.
Some orgs' hiring process really can take ages though, so I wouldn't recommend it if you can't afford to forgo income for a few months.
How did you guys keep from getting anxious about the process and not jumping at the first available opportunity after quitting?
Wel if you can do something with a non profit or something that occupies the gap and make it a life experience between jobs
^ Lol me too
Yeah but not voluntarily
Take the sabbatical and then start interviewing before it ends. Best of both worlds
Yes.. Worked on my golf game for a year - about to start grad school - best decision of my life
