Never accept a match. They will make you grind twice as hard. Now if they are going to give you an offer above and beyond 30% then maybe listen. But likely still walk.

Not true EYP1. Accepted a counter-offer. WLB improved, I got promoted next cycle, and I have way better relationships and visibility with various MDs now because of the heart to hearts that were had as a result of me saying I’m leaving and negotiating the counteroffer. Every situation is different.

like

even if they match it, they will remember that you were going to leave. they might hold it over you. they might match it for a couple of months while they look for your replacement and then force you out. Or, it might go perfectly, but i doubt it. remember, they don’t care about you at all. you’re just an employee ID number in a utilization spreadsheet.

like

Depends on why you wanted to leave in the first place… If purely comp then listen to the counter offer. Keep in mind, you likely won’t be viewed favorably long term if you stay and you raises will likely be adjusted to make up for the counteroffer over time. If other i.e no path to Partner (assuming was you goal, bad environment, you just hate it, etc.) the I would not waste their time.

Listen and thank them for recognizing your value as a strong contributor. But let them know you're moving forward with resignation (after the offer is signed and background complete etc.) Let them know you've appreciated the time here and you want to grow and develop and maybe one day you can bring an even stronger skillset back to the org (assuming that's true of your experience). Good luck, and congrats! ❤

If they match 30% it shows you they could have been paying you more the entire time, but chose not to.

That’s not realistic approach

like

Absolutely, nothing to lose by listening. I also recommend that you reflect deeper, look beyond $. In this market every company will offer you a pay bump, but, is the role actually right for you? What is it that you want out of your career? Will the new role take you there? Does the new role have the career development, career path and pay growth you want? I thought about leaving many times just for the initial $ and ended up staying bc I didn’t feel I learned everything I could at this firm, and then the $ followed (looking at overall progression, I doubled my pay from when I started 6 years ago)

They'll offer you a match... but on the back end of that they are trying to figure out a way to replace you because of your disloyalty.

Never stay once you decide to leave and have an offer. You will be marked forever

Move on, you'll thank yourself later, no doubt!

The consulting services teams of big tech (Microsoft, Google, Salesforce, etc) seem like obvious entry points for consultants due to relevant experience, but they get little attention here. Why is that? Do those roles lack good pay, advancement opportunities or better WLB vs working for a consultancy? Do they have the same focus on firm initiatives, utilization and BD/sales as consulting firms?
