Isn’t severance something that is earned because you are being laid off? You should be entitled to it even if you find another job faster than expected
These are not related things! Your severance is a voluntary compensation by your company for dismissing you. It's not like you're receiving unemployment benefits from tax dollars while also being employed.
I did it and nobody was the wiser. Just don’t update your linked in until severance stops.
Try get he severance in a lump sum. That way it's in your account no matter whether they find out or not.
It’s not unemployment...it’s severance. Your ties to current role WILL be severed — regardless of whether you’ll actually ever be unemployed
Are they under the same holding company? I think that's the only way it would be an issue.
^Yeah. Check the paperwork. Pretty sure there isn’t a clause about getting new job. It will affect insurance maybe
Makes no difference
The severance is your hush money to sign the document that gives away your right to sue. (If you disagree, see if you can get severance without signing any paperwork). This is not double dipping it’s getting compensated for signing their bullshit hr docs
in my experience, severance was positioned as a bridge to help me land on my feet, and it was meant to end when I started another job. I was asked (with a wink) to inform my previous employer. but the only way they could have found out was if I told them. Which I did not and my bank account still thanks me for it.
It’s almost always in the paperwork that if you get a new job, you’re supposed to alert them and stop receiving it. However, only way they would find out is if new company called the old one to verify employment or check references. Just play dumb, keep quiet, and you’ll be fine. People on this thread are confusing unemployment with severance (where legal issues and a tax form would come in play). You should absolutely stop collecting unemployment once you start a new job.
With freelance I have
Definitely read the paperwork.
Not the same holding company.
@OP you should be good then, just don't tell anyone.
At our agency it's called "bridging salary" instead of "severance" and if you have any income before it runs out, legally you're supposed to notify them and they subtract what you earn from the amount they pay you.
I was lucky enough to do that once. It was great
I've always heard once you file another tax form your first company gets notified.
From my recent paperwork, you won't get severance if it's under the same holding company. If you get a job elsewhere within the time you're receiving severance they will deduct your new salary from your severance and give you the difference (that's if they find out. And I'm not sure how they would even know your new salary - but that's what it says on my paperwork)
