Yes, I'm on short term disability right now. I felt the same as you, but it was the best thing I could've done to get myself whole again. I was able to extract myself from a situation with a micromanager that nearly broke me. You'll get 13 weeks at full pay, peace of mind to remember who you are...and time to look for a job that doesn't drive you to the place you are now. Don't think twice, do it. Feel free to message me if you want to know how to proceed (it shouldn't be too different from company to company).
Can you share how you went about getting the short term disability? I’ve been considering something similar but no idea how to approach the situation. I don’t have a primary care doctor but I do have a long term therapist (MSW)
Yes, I took a leave of absence for a month to deal with burnout and exhaustion so bad that I passed out at work. I initially felt guilty for getting paid time off. But looking back, I'd given too much of myself at work and needed the time to reflect on what mattered to me. I took a new role when I returned to work, and awkwardly told my manager, "I'm making it a point to work less hard, to be easier on myself, to not hold myself to such high standards." To my pleasant surprise, she said, "That's wise. I support you in your choice." I am SO glad I took that time away from work. You're more than just your job.
Yes. I was away for about 7 months . I actually was in hospital for 2 .
I did, sort of. Rather than taking leave, I resigned and took two months off before starting my next job. It sounds like you're in a better position than me, though, so I would not recommend resignation. Those two months made a world of difference. They reversed 2-3 years of burnout, improved my mood, and gave me more energy to do what I'm doing now. Your personal experience is more important than other people's opinions, by far. I would advise caution with how you word your request. Most people will be understanding, but there are people out there who might try to use this information against you. That was one of the key reasons I resigned: I told something to a powerful and horribly un-empathetic person who took it upon themself to run me out.
MPC are you at Capco? I am at a similar spot.
I took a couple of weeks off and it helped a bit. But within a few months, felt it start to accumulate again and I’ve now quit my job for a break due to burnout.
Just to add - my immediate manager didn’t take it well and I think in hindsight I could have worded it better - but everyone else took it well and was extremely supportive. My friends and family too were extremely supportive. I say take the time you need; and those who mind really don’t matter and those who matter will support you. Good luck!
planning to take fmla as well. how long do you guys think i should do it for as a first timer? i’m in the same company for almost 3 years with a bully boss. now the boss has changed and he’s much nicer but he doesn’t completely understand how severe my burnout and traums is… i got to the point of not being able to function at work.
