My manager actually encouraged me to speak with HR and they were extremely accommodating. I took five weeks off and the team was so supportive when i came back. I highly encourage you to talk to HR.
@GSPD, how did you get those conversations started internally and with HR? I have some mental health issues that I’ve been considering taking FMLA and short term disability for similar to OP and it feels incredibly daunting to even get the process started.
Yes I took a month off. It was helpful. When I can back people were mostly supportive though my boss expected an immediate snap back to the pleasant old me and I wasn’t quite there.
@AS1 I went to my boss first and told her I was suffering and it wasn’t just normal stress. She suggested I talk to HR. The day to day person wasn’t helpful but I asked to talk to a more senior person who was professional and understanding and gave me options
Had to google FMLA, Canadian here. I’ve had staff and co-workers take time off - but things may be different here.
I’m actually trying to manage my short term disability claim right now. I think the biggest thing is to be upfront and honest - I was super surprised at how supportive my leadership was. Obviously ymmv but the process is super complex and annoying so make sure you have someone who can help you maneuver it.
I was honest too that I felt my mental health was not only affecting my work, but my coworkers as well and I was concerned about keep the office environment positive.
