I worry more about my appearance going in front of a female judge than a male judge.
100% by the women staff in my office on a daily basis. We should be supporting one another, not degrading one another.
Yes, I am with you. It’s so disheartening.
Yep. Had to completely reevaluate my boundaries with colleagues.
I was chit chatting with a seemingly friendly older female adversary on our way out of the ladies’ room at a deposition when I was a baby attorney. During the discussion, she asked how many years I’d been practicing. She seemed so friendly that I was completely off guard, and I divulged that I’d been practicing for less than a year. I learned a valuable lesson when she included in her argument opposing a motion I brought a few weeks later that the judge should not grant my motion because I hadn’t even been practicing a year yet! Thankfully our motion judge was appalled by her pettiness and complimented me on the record for being so involved in a case as a young attorney. We won that motion, and it was a sweet victory, but it has absolutely changed the way I interact with opposing counsel (especially female OC).
Thankful for that judge!
Absolutely. Agree.
Yes and especially from the female partners
Yes
I agree! It’s rough.
I am one of only two female attorneys in a small firm I work in. The other female has been with this firm for several years, and was recently promoted to partner. I am fairly new, graduated in 2017. I keep thinking, there is no way she is talking to the male associates the way she talks to me. At times it is so disrespectful.
I agree. It’s unfortunate because young female associates crave female on female mentorships. Not to be all high and mighty or anything, but we are still a part of a bigger feminist revolution, especially in the legal field, and we need to support each other so the next generation doesn’t meet as much sexism and resistance. Women weren’t allowed to wear pants (literal pants, not a metaphor) on the senate floor until 1993 - that wasn’t so long ago, people! My point is - young female attorneys have it coming from all angles, not just older men. It would change my whole world if a female partner just asked, “How are you doing?” once a month.
Agree!
100%
At my prior firm, the only mean partners in my practice group were female; the male partners were nurturing. I was so disappointed that women could be so hostile to other women.
