Has anyone found fulfillment after switching areas? I started in mass torts (p side), now in a niche transactional practice. Thinking I’ll give defense lit a try but unsure if that’s the right move?

I usually don’t get hired until trial is inevitable and imminent. One occasionally do I get hired for brand new cases. So a disproportionate number of the matters I work on reach trial.

I started in PI insurance defense (commercial carriers eg 18 wheelers) and almost left law altogether. I switch to transactional and it was cool for a bit, but I got bored very easily. Now, I do general commercial lit and it’s varied enough that I’m never bored and I generally enjoy the work.
All that being said, don’t be scared to change practice areas to figure out what interests you and maybe take some CLEs or talk to attorneys in the specific field for some insight on practice areas you may be considering.

Yes, I started off in a very niche transactional practice area and moved to general M&A. When I left, I was given the “but there’s room for you for advancement” speech, but I was so bored that even if that speech were true, I couldn’t imagine spending 8+ years of my life doing what I was doing. The change was rough at first, but I’m much happier now than I would have been had I stayed (probably would have left law). You really never know until you try.

Thank you for the feedback! Definitely helpful and confirming I need to make the move.

There is a lot of discrimination in my school in regards to LGBTQ and gender representation. Started at a new firm right at the end of feb. It's small with a couple of offices. Is it acceptable to take off 7 days of PTO in October? Our PTO does not roll over and I can't get compensated for the days I don't take. I'm usually of the yolo opinion but also worried it will make me look bad to be out for over a week (Thursday Friday one week and then Mon-Fri the next week)
