Has anyone gone from BigLaw to start their own successful corporate/commercial law firm? How’d that go for you? In hindsight, would you do it all again? I worked at a boutique before joining BigLaw and the partners at the boutique seemed very happy/comfortable with their lifestyle, and they said they get paid more than when they were partners at a mid-tier firm.

UK Corporate lawyer here. In my appraisal I was told I am not performing to 3PQE.
I joined from a client, following in-house training. I then moved at the beginning of the pandemic and my offer was pushed 6 months (where I wasn’t working). I then joined on the condition that I did real estate for 6 months.
I have also spent 4 months on parental leave, so I have only spent 16 months in the team. I am paid the same as an NQ. This all feels very unfair. Please share any advice you may have.

Our attorneys have been wfh since the pandemic started. Our office lease is up for renewal and we are evaluating our needs for office space. Most attorneys want flexibility to come into the office but do not want to come in every day. We are looking at office shares, only assigning an office if the attorney will come in minimum 3 days a week, etc.

I'm wondering what other firms are doing about office space.

Normal to ask for a bonus during a mid year review? For context, I work at a small (20ish attorney) law firm in a major market. The firm said this is the first year they are doing mid year reviews for associates. I’m a first year, 9 months into the job.

If an associate leaves a firm, does the firm talk shit about them or do they just say nice things to preserve the relationship? I am worried because I am thinking of leaving but don’t believe my firm would be supportive of me. I try my best, stay late, and put in the hours but get (pretty selective IMO) negative feedback occasionally. I think the key problem is I am not the right social fit for my practice group. I would say only good things about the firm because I truly think it’s a fit issue.

We’ve been absolutely slammed all year with litigation. Working late nights and weekends. 200+ billable months. Partner on the case often leaves early on Friday while I keep grinding. We have a very logical end to these cases in a few months and I told him I need to take a vacation. He said he will not authorize it until he takes a vacation which he doesn’t have time to plan right now. I’m about to blow my lid.

I’m a first year - partner gave shitty instructions (objectively) to a time-sensitive drafting project. They’ve been on vacation. I’ve been drowning lately, so I wake up super early to finish the draft and send it in around noon. Partner wanted it by 3 pm today, but doesn’t look at it until 5:30. Realizes I didn’t do what he wanted - which he never told me - and wants a redraft in an hour. How’s your Friday going?

Hi everyone, hopefully someone can answer this question for me. I recently started working at this new place. I got an offer letter, passed live scan, had orientation etc. However, nowhere in the offer letter or in orientation have they mentioned preemployment drug testing. Since I already had a start date, is it safe to use cannabis at this point? Or should I wait longer to be able to use it. I use it to help me sleep. I’m tired of using other medicines to help me sleep. Thanks.

What is the partnership track like at your firm? At my firm, a fairly large IP boutique, you typically spend 8 years as an associate before being up for partner. You could go to counsel at 7/8 years.
