Hi all, recently a recruiter from Amazon reached out for an SDE 2(2+ years of exp. required) role and I'm a recent CS grad. I gave the OA (which was extremely difficult w/ 99% cut-off) and other tasks related to the OA. A few hours back, I got a call from the recruiter that I had cleared the assessment and tasks and said that they are looking for 2+ years of exp. š Yup. I was lucky to have a supportive CD at one of my agencies. I talked to him and my manager about my ambitions and they siphoned work to me as they could. I built a portfolio. Went freelance and built out my creative chops, then found an ACD role with a formerly freelance client.
It's a tough transition, because recruiters will be confused by you. Best advice is to talk to your managers, and present yourself as you want to be seen, and try to build a portfolio for the work you want to be doing.
Think about it this way. As a creative producer, if you came across your portfolio, would you hire you as a copywriter? If not, what would you need to change in order to convince yourself to make that hire?
Having broadcast work always helps, but it's hard to get that without a portfolio showing it. The beauty of writing is that words are words regardless of medium. Social can go a long way if you're applying for digital files or digital agencies. I had a lot of PR clients early, and most of my work is longer short form (brand content, web films, etc.), but that's also the area I wanted to work in. I didn't (and still don't) have much interest in broadcast.
My portfolio had a couple smaller TV spots, 2-3min animations, documentaries that I had CD'd or led editorial strategy on, and short films.
As someone else on here said, the other element of success is hustle. Treat yourself as a brand and a business.
It's also very competitive right now. Don't feel down if it takes a couple years to shift over. Or longer. Once the economy starts coming back things will get better and opportunities will be more frequent.
I havenāt personally but I can think of five people in my network that have. Most seem to have been dogged in their efforts to do the creative ideation taking any opportunity given them, pestering creative directors for the opportunity to contribute ideas or crafting this independently until they got to the point that people saw them as a creative who was also doing production and willing to champion them to join the creative department when the opportunity arose.
I donāt have an answer, but I feel you. Iām a PM and former creative producer who worked at the beginning of my career as a photographer and gothic designer. Iāve realized I should have perused an AD role, but Iām in my 30s and in an established PM role at an agency I love.
Or maybe Iām just the classic PM who thinks they can AD š

I donāt, but Iām genuinely interested in how you started out in production. Iām trying to make the switch from agency life (Business development based)
I started out as a PA on film and TV sets, eventually went in-house at a production company that mostly did digital shows. When a show I was on got cancelled, an agency liked my digital background and brought me on as a Jr producer and then stayed in the ad world since.
