Has anyone gone through several rounds of interviews with a firm only to be told they’ve decided not to hire anyone at the present time but will be reconsidering in a few months? Is this a bad sign?

Generally means they are pursuing other people and you are a last option. If they don’t sign these other people, they may come back to you. Think about it as being waitlisted

Happened to me. Never heard back from them. They never hired anyone. The big law firm is still around and I’m at a better place

Happened to my friend - they ended up passing on them after a few months

Firm passed on the friend

My current firm told me client needs changed suddenly and they’re holding off until after the new year to fill this position (this was in September). They contacted me the following year (I wasn’t super anxious to leave my prior position and hadn’t been looking that intently so I was still available) to pick up where we left off in the process and I received an offer. I’ve been there almost 3 years. My experience probably isn’t typical but you just never know what’s going on behind the scenes.

I think it happens when the top one or few candidates declines the offer and or what’s left from the applicant pool is just not right for the firm. So they pause and maybe network or use a recruiter and reassess and try again later. We’ve done this recently

Means either you didn’t wow them enough to get chosen or they can’t afford to hire any longer..assuming one or the other who cares? Keep applying and keep interviewing. What changes if you know the answer to this? I’ll answer…absolutely nothing. Brush it off and move on.

Also work for a firm that wants to work with you.

Looking to exit consulting. Currently an analyst in SF and I will be applying for roles in big tech (FB, Google, Square, etc). Since I have multiple areas of interest, is it okay to apply to multiple job positions at these firms since they are so large, or should I stick with only one or two roles?

Do you have small talks with your manager and directs? Feel like an as*hole for not liking it. My boss likes to start our 1 on 1s with topics around family, trip plans, hobbies, and other small talks. I don’t care how his weekend was. Or his baby. And personally I don’t like sharing much about my family or personal life so the small talks thing is very annoying to me. He’s super nice and I like him a lot but I just don’t feel like we should try hard to get to know each other via small talks.
