If you are a strong performer and the firm thinks they can keep you, you could expect a challenging conversation where you are asked to reflect on your decision. It should be a respectful conversation. There is no reason for the firm to make it an “easy” conversation.
If anyone pushes back they're being selfish. Don't worry about it.
Never take a counter offer, even if it’s better than the offer you’re leaving for. You either leave now on your own terms, or later on the firm’s
Ehh depends. For example if leaving Bc of hours and they offer you good pay to stay on part time, may be worth it!
I’m getting a ton of pushback. Not negative or anything, but trying to convince me to stay.
I wouldn’t call it pushback, but they will probably not be happy. It will likely be awkward, and it certainly won’t be “chill and smooth.” They have a client’s expectations to manage, and a team’s perspectives to manage. Be positive, humble, and confident despite the awkwardness. It won’t be the last or the most awkward moment in your career. Think of it as practice.
Only time I’ve put in my two weeks I got talked into staying so I get why you’re nervous. As others have said though make sure you really understand your reasons for leaving and be confident in your decision.
Except for the people who leave three years later for a much better offer. Or the people who never leave.
I watched a guy get his name dragged through the mud (perhaps justly) for quitting right before a busy season. Be careful out there.
Just go in with your resignation letter in hand. I got pushback before but when I did it this way, none. Also, just say nice things.
