Has anyone gotten a job by directly applying on the firm’s website? Or is engaging a recruiter or seeking a referral the norm?

I have interview with six law firms right now. For four of them, I applied direct, no recruiter. I’m a junior though.

How junior are you?

I am in-house now but was a senior associate involved in interviewing junior/mid-level laterals for a few openings. Not a huge sample size, but almost every recruiter cover letter/email I saw was pretty useless. If recruiters are claiming it’s a value-add, that’s not consistent with my experience. If you’re a candidate, I’d suggest asking to review the submittal email so you can see what the recruiter is saying. I think there may have been one or two cases where the recruiter provided useful context about the candidate/explained a gap in the resume, but the candidate could have done that him/herself if applying directly.

It wasn’t asked, but I got my in-house job as a result of an internal recruiter reaching out to me.

Got a job and got to third round of interviews at another firm, both through applications on the website. These were both secondary markets though, where firms like avoiding recruiter costs.

This is a common misconception! I work with many mid-size and small firms. They call me to help them with the search, not the other way around.

funny

Of course! Plenty of associates get jobs applying on their own. Engaging with a recruiter helps ease the process and take work of your plate as they handle the process of applications, scheduling interviews, and sourcing new job options for you. Good recruiters provide insight on the market and really guide you to the right roles. They also can help with resume edits, interview prep and negotiations. Referrals are another great way to get your foot in the door, but after the resume is shared, othere isn’t always the same follow up or advocacy you get from a recruiter or yourself. It’s good to use both resources (just not for the same firm).

Can anyone please refer some of these good recruiters??! We keep hearing there are good ones out there but hardly anyones seems willing to help with a name.

I am a Clinical Exercise Physiologist with 15 years of experience looking for a job. However, I have spent the past 18 years as a stay-at-home parent (I did work as a free-lance web designer & part-time teacher). I spent much of 2021 working full-time at a winery, but quite when I realized that I'd only be happy by getting back into healthcare (cardiac & pulmonary rehab and clinical exercise testing). I just updated my BLS, ACLS, and my ACSM CEP Cert. I can't get an interview. Any thoughts?

I have a case study presentation I received as a 3rd interview round.
The role has 2 main functions - operations and sale analytics. During my first 2 interviews I explained I do not have a sales background and my expertise is on the ops side with process improvement and production.
My case study is sales forecasting deal closure probability. I don’t even know where to start.
Do I just tell them I am not familiar? I assume I will be rejected if I do.

For the junior associates out there, I’m a 2020 call and am convinced that I’m taking a lot of time while working on deals. I’m also not really sure how my efficiency compares to other associates as I’m the only junior in the group. The junior partner I work with primarily always tells me to rack up my hours but I’m also afraid of looking inefficient with the more senior partners. Does anyone ever write down their own time? Or is ashamed of how long it takes to draft say a direction to pay?

Can anyone speak to using Turo to rent a second vehicle? I live in Portland OR. Assuming that’s a decent market? This wouldn’t be to “make money” - more so just hoping to cover cost of car payment and insurance and maintenance so that I can get a new 2nd vehicle. Not trying to get a full blown car rental business off the ground. Anyone had success passively renting a second vehicle in a market this size?
