It kills me because he caught this at day care. He has not been around any other dogs in the past month aside from the ones at day care. Who knew it was such a common thing. If only people would be honest about not bringing dogs who were sick.
I did end up boarding him at the vet. Rover or a sitter wouldn’t work because he has separation anxiety. I’d rather him be in a place where there are people around than leave him home alone like that. Besides I wouldn’t feel comfortable with strangers being in my house overnight. All my friends have animals of their own too :/ and the ones I usually use were traveling out of the country the same week. Just bad timing all around.
I called the day care and told them he caught kennel cough there. They were sympathetic but that’s about it.
Happy to report he’s on antibiotics though and day before I left he didn’t cough at all!
I’d never allow someone from Rover to watch my dog while sick, I’d board at the vet if I was you. As another poster said, getting sick can quickly become something scary and it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Have you tried a dog sitting service that comes to you? Like Rover. They can stay overnight and watch him or visit during the day however many times you select.
Yeah any place that boards dogs-with the possible exception of your vet—won’t take your pup with kennel cough because it’s super contagious. And if your vet does, it won’t just be a boarding fee, there’ll be treatment charges also. That said, I’d definitely take your dog to the vet. A friend of mine’s sweet pupper had kennel cough that worsened to pneumonia and she almost lost her
Such good news. Although the day care should not take any pet that is not properly vaccinated. They should require updated vet records.
When I owned my boarding place and the dog had separation anxiety, I would keep the dog with me. At all times they were in my office or under my feet at the front desk. I'd even take them home. I miss that.
Do Rover. It’s only $25 a night or something like that but just make sure you tell the person watching them in case they have to be in contact with other dogs.
Dogs or cats of their own. This is the most frustrating thing ever trying to figure out a boarding solution for my dog so he is taken care of while I am gone!
Have you had him vaccinated? The place I board my dog requires proof of vaccination. He gets a little tired for a day or two after the vaccination but it does seem effective at preventing kennel cough
Look at rover.com. It’s just individuals who will watch your dog in your or their home
In my other life I owned a pet resort. Kennel cough is highly contagious so boarding facilities will not take an infected dog. Here is some info:

Pet sitters would be a great option. Rover.com or Care.com could offer choices. Your vet would be the best option. They can treat your dog while there. The cost will be high, but if it were my baby it's a no brainer.
Do you know where your dog could have been infected? If recently boarded, a call to let them know is in order.
Hope he feels better soon!
Yay! Glad to hear he's on the mend!
Update: 1 month later and he caught another flipping strain and it was so bad this time! #donewithdaycare
