Has anyone worked at a place where there wasn’t one toxic person there ? Or am I asking to much ? That would be my dream where there was team work and everyone worked together. No back stabbing or gossiping Managers who did the right thing

I picked up a motto from a wonderful former coworker. She had this saying , “Work where your celebrated not tolerated” As an In home caregiver I have cared for some precious people. I have cared for some scary people of whom I graciously give my 2 weeks notice and internally my inward person has raced to leave immediately. It took every part of my will power to keep grounded to endure my 2 weeks. I will not subject myself to abusive people! I have 0 tolerance

like

Thank you for sharing. I think I'll start saying that to people as well, I think it's quite nicely put :)

The bigger your org, the bigger the chances that you will encounter someone toxic. I think that dream is achievable if you look for someone with their own practice. I worked at a dentist's office a lifetime ago and it was the loveliest team I ever had the pleasure to work with.

There is always one. I try to find them right away so I can limit interactions if possible. But there’s always one, unfortunately!

I love those first weeks of unraveling the mystery of who's going to be the biggest thorn on my side for the next few years. Always a treat...

like

Yes, I did, for 12 years. Unfortunately the owner decided that helping children in the community wasn’t making him enough money, so he closed us down a few months ago. We had an awesome staff, and it was Heaven.

like

Agreed; if you find a place like that, please let me know! I have a supervisor who plays favorites. I wish there were some way to prove it, but you know how it is. I'm looking for another job right now because I don't think I can handle this much longer.

like

In my experience, some of these people are only in those roles for their ability to play the internal politics game and not as much for their performance. There are great supervisors, but they are few and far between.

like

I find it hard to imagine one, to be honest. So much unnecessary drama to add to the day-to-day operations. I wish what you wish, though. Life would be easier with that. However, since reality begs to differ, I hope you find your niche who can help make things a little better with their presence. Keep on, Miss/Sir!

Thank You!!

I work with a wonderful team of people without toxicity. Sometimes we get on each others nerves but we all get along. Our director worked hard to make sure we learned how to work well together and understand how we are different and how our differences make us a stronger team. I’m sure she put some of her own money into hosting events for us to get to know each other and our families. We celebrate each others successes and support each other when they need help.

We make sure to hire people who would be the right fit too. If someone doesn’t share our philosophy or has a bad attitude during the interview, they won’t get an offer. Occasionally, someone toxic slips in, but they don’t last long because misery loves company but no one will join in their nonsense and won’t tolerate the toxicity. My direct manager addresses issues immediately as the occur so things don’t fester.

like

Your Director sounds like a dream. I'm glad some people get to work with true leaders that actually inspire their teams. Gives me some hope!

like

Sorry. . It doesn't exist. . . Best you can hope for is a team where the majority of your coworkers try their best to be relatively decent the majority of the time. All the best.

likesmart

Now that you say it like that, isn't that the best we can ask of pretty much anyone in any scenario? To be decent the majority of the time. None of us are infallible. Idk just a thought, don't mean to discredit what you're saying.

like

I have never worked at a place where there wasn’t at least 1 toxic person.. like you, that would be my dream job to work where there is genuinely good people who care about the rest of the team and we collectively work hard and contribute to each other’s success

like

It's true, but I think that just comes with the territory. You put enough people in one place there's bound to be a disruptor. Humans come in all shapes and forms and not all of them are pleasant.

like

I’ve been in the same team for 9 years. We do clinical analytic work. We have a good working relationship, speak respectfully to each other and speak professionally to each other. We don’t have time for that drama shit.

like

RN Clinician - no it’s a full time load and salary based role. Some of the analysts in our dept hold rn licenses or even social work ones since we work with clinical data, mrr work, hl7 data, etc. Mostly though the data we work with also requires technical skills to do reporting, gaps in care, outreach work, research provider info, etc.

I did many years ago and still remain in contact with all of them.

Now, I find that the most gossipy are the best of buds with the managers and many managers are just put into these positions by their friends. Not sure when we also started this practice but not everyone is a born manager/leader.

likefunny

You have to go into this thinking one thing.

Not everyone in life has matured past high school. There are plenty of people who peaked in the 11th year of school and think that is how life works.

One of the best things that one of my managers has ever told me is "unfortunately these people are not your friends, they are your coworkers. you have to go in with the mentality that a lot of people are here to support their family, themselves, or someone else."

like

Unresolved trauma and unhealthy coping mechanisms will get you there. It's infuriating to be around these people around the clock but I would go crazy if I took everything they did and said to heart. I give them my pity and nothing more.

You’ll always have one toxic person. I spent a year cleaning house and getting a whole new crew in there and it was HARD, but the BEST decision I made. I have one person left, that despite my efforts to coach up, has proven she really just needs to go. Once that happens, we will be close, but never fully toxic free.

like

I commend you!!! I wish more admin would do this. You have no idea the toll on employees that go thru this. Great Job!! That’s why I always think get rid of them they will stop their behavior eventually

like

Mine was close, until they started hiring finance people from Microsoft…. 🙄

like

It’s definitely contributed to the toxic focus on money and efficiency vs. patient care at the organization I work for.

I prepare regulatory reporting for several hospitals for my employer, and the SVP (an ex-Microsoft person) my department reports to wants us to spend half the time we normally do on this reporting, disregarding the fact that we have to go through thousands of invoices to capture contract labor and physicians wage data (this is used to help set future Medicare reimbursement rates), ensure that data from the various medical education programs are reported correctly in order to get the reimbursement we are entitled to (physician, nursing, pharmacy, pastoral care and other residency programs, radiology and other training programs), so on and so forth.

The reporting we have to do to Medicare to make sure that hospitals get the reimbursement they’re entitled to is complex, labor intensive and time consuming, and it helps set the rates for the following fiscal year.

The worst part about this SVP? He told us that he gave himself 90 days to learn healthcare finance. 🙄

I only handle one small piece that touches every department and every inch of the hospitals I work with, and he doesn’t want to learn anything as to why what we do is so important and why it’s so complex.

The hospitals that take the Medicare cost reports for granted are the ones that close, plain and simple. You don’t want to leave money on the table…the margin between surviving and closing is that slim.

Right, and it's not like managers can't see it. They recognize these toxic employees. Sometimes I think managers get a kick out of seeing bad actors making everyone else miserable.

like

I like to think some of the managers are like the orchestrators behind the drama. I mean, isn't it their fault that toxic people don't get removed when people complain about them enough? I feel like making everyone uncomfortable and disturbing the workflow is reason enough to fire them.

like

When you find that place, I want to work there as well. Toxic everywhere I go.

like

You should do it! What kind of business would you start?

like

There’s always someone or something toxic at work. Sometimes a single person, sometimes management as a whole. I have been in a position where there was very minimal toxicity and now I’m in a position with so many toxic people that it’s not worth it to stay. You’re very lucky if you find a place that isn’t super toxic.

like

ugh, I had a non-toxic workplace once but they pay was so little I couldn't justify staying 😖

I have worked for two organizations that were absolutely amazing!
