Any advice for how to decline travel? Partner is pushing for us to go but there is a delta variant and I want to be able to spend time with my family without worrying I’ll infect them. The team culture is quite toxic (these people berate each other daily) so I feel uncomfortable speaking up, but I really don’t see a good reason for going there to do work I can do from home.

I was doing the hiring interview for an experienced hire last week, in our technology consulting practice. I discussed the career level, specialty group, type of work, etc. The candidate then said that they would only accept the offer if it allowed them to work from home, indefinitely. Have others encountered such a request? BTW, no offer was extended. I couldn’t commit to “indefinite WFH”, when clients often require us on-site and with out-of-town travel.

I currently work on a team that has a micromanager. Now one of the other people on my team who I am more senior than is attempting to micromamage me as well. Any advice on how to handle? No one on my team is my direct supervisor however, I do get a comp from the FAs (the lead FA is micromanager #1). A couple of weeks ago I told micromanager #2 to back off and yesterday spoke with my lead FA about this person's behavior because they won't let up. The FA just dismissed me. Do I need a new job?

How good are p2p interviewing sites (e.g pramp, interviewing.io) for practicing system design interviews? This is the interview format I’m least comfortable with so I definitely need the practice. My worry is if people giving the interviews are also inexperienced, doesn’t that defeat the purpose? Are there other alternatives (paid acceptable) that better mimic a real system design interview at FAANG if you’re in a time crunch?

I'm going to be accepting an offer to a firm. I have a pre planned trip in May I am going to tell them about and ask if that will be an issue (could be cancelled if it's an issue). I am also traveling on Presidents' Day as my current firm has that off. That trip is paid for and not refundable. I’m not naive or fresh out of law school, but I’m at a point where I’m saying to myself “Why can’t I have it all?” I’ve been offered a job for more pay and less hours and I keep thinking to myself, what’s the catch? I know people will say no promotion potential or that’s not how it works…but what if it could? What if you make yourself valuable by still setting your boundaries? Why would we resent someone who has that opportunity?

Just finished my first year in big law. In a niche practice area that could transfer well to in house position if they are looking for someone specializing in this area (many of our clients are GCs in this exact role), however I worry those jobs may not be abundant. I want to jump in 3-4 years. What can I do in the meantime to make myself look appealing as a more general GC candidate assuming my ideal job isn’t out there at that time?

I went in house at an IB love the work, people, life work balance but I also really miss litigation, miss the intensity of it, the power, risk and reward.

A vent and a question: First week at a new firm and between the housekeeping, tech setups, meet and greets, marketing stuff, being caught between their internal squabbling and just trying to get file access- I have barely been able to bill. As an associate, how long should you wait after lateraling to a new firm before you take a vacation?

I just got a conditional offer of employment. BUT, I have to fill out a form with my last three employers and mark whether I’m ok with them being contacted. One of my prior bosses was a VERY toxic man, who made my life a living hell while I was there. I am terrified he would say horrible things about me if this potential employer called him. I have the option to mark “no” and have them NOT contact this old boss. Should I do that? Would it look bad?

How argumentative are you with your partners? I was assigned to draft a motion. I studied the issue for hours. Felt sure about my findings. I drafted it and sent it for review. Partner came back with a different argument, which I know to be wrong based on the case law. Ultimately, we went back on forth on drafts over this issue but I couldn’t give her what she wanted because I can’t physically argue something I think is flat out wrong. She ended up doing it herself.
