Seems like a pretty bad idea and an easy way to not look great to your new boss - especially if you negotiated a good offer with them first.
Agreed.
Just wait the 6-12 months to negotiate again when it's appropriate.
You can try to negotiate but wouldn’t it leave a bad taste with your employer? What would stop you from negotiating every time you see a better offer in the market?
If my salary doesn't track the market I will be negotiating.
Although, I don't mind waiting until it's appropriate. But if my mid year or yearly adjustment isn't up to par with what is market, that's a big red flag to me as an employee.
Unless you're a startup or have unique circumstances, there are no excuses.
I wouldn’t try to renegotiate unless you’re prepared to walk away. If you want the job, don’t do it.
The whole key to negotiation is are you ready to walk. If you are just trying to negotiate more money, but aren’t serious about the other offer, it’s pretty transparent. You’re also assuming your employer wants you to stay. It’s always possible they are ready for someone new. Just be careful about overestimating your leverage if you aren’t serious about leaving.
Have been in this situation recently. Tell them the new terms and be ready to walk. Walked but make more $$ so who cares. It’s a small world, but a big ocean. Just tell them you have a competing offer for more money and need to provide a response in X days. You’d like to give the firm an opportunity to match or exceed, but this is the situation. This is a business. You’re a business(your mind and labor). And this is a business decision. All things equal (fit, future, team) equal - take more $$. You won’t burn any bridges that were worth keeping. Anyone reasonable person would understand.
